Laptop Backpack/Bag

Well

I'm looking for a laptop bag/backpack. For the past month I've fiddled with a SpireUSA backpack. It's nice, it has amazing reviews, but for $150, I expect it to be perfect. :) There are a few seams on it that are not up to par with my perfectionism. :)

I'm wondering what laptop backpacks/bags some of you would recommend. I'm not willing to go over $150 (I'd rather just get another Spire, if that were the case ;)). A normal laptop case is okay, I guess, although I'd prefer something like a backpack or a courier bag...

btw, *protection* is the most important buying decision. Looks aren't that important, but I want more padding and protection on my laptop than most average bags (i.e., Targus) can provide... I'm not willing to risk a $2000 backpack getting ruined b/c I can't dish out a bit more dough than the average joe.

Thoughts/ideas/help appreciated. :)

How secure is the laptop in the bag?

I saw that one at Best Buy I believed. When I bought my Matrix Targus backpack before, I was not too impressed with the level of padding -- it was just lacking... And since the backpack lies completely against your back, I always worried of stressing the laptop's exterior when I bent over or when my back wasn't completely straight.

targus!i have the sports version. security? not sure. i mean, it stil works and stuff. but the monitor gets pressed against the keys, leaving a mark. sometimes i worry if it'll break the screen altogether.

most notebook bags look dorky as all hell, especially the targus ones i've seen sitting around my campus store - and for $150 you better throw in some style w/ functionality. i've got an all black nike epic bag. you get pick em up at ebags for ~130 w/ their coupons that float around every so often.

edit: i had this jansport bag before. although there's something to be desired in the style department, it offers awesome protection and is an overall quality bag.

That is what worries me. :)

$2500 laptop, don't want to risk ruining a single thing, especially the streen...that's why I'm willing to dish out a bit of dough.

Has anybody tried any Brenthaven bags?

http://www.brenthaven.com/

They look *top* notch (even better than a Spire bag!?), and they aren't too terribly outrageously priced...

I'm impressed! I'd love to give one a spin, but I have to see if they have a local retailer around here. I hate paying shipping charges to mail something back...

Any more ideas/thoughts appreciated. :D

I think if you go with the higher end Targus bags you are ok. I have no issues with my laptop at all and I put books in my bag too.

I have a Brenthaven bag for my 17 Inch Powerbook. It is the shoulder strap bag. It is very well built, and the sleeve for the laptop gives ample cushioning. I am looking into getting the backpack one too, just so I have it for the times when it would be much more useful then a shoulder strap bag.

Where did you buy yours, if you don't mind me asking?

Yo,
I love my Swiss Army laptop bag, it's taken a lot of abuse over the last two years and is still in great shape. :)

It also comes with a $1500 insurance policy against theft. :D

However, these bags are EXPENSIVE. :(

You can get a similar bag for 1/2 to 1/3 of the price. :)

Good luck,
PCM

i have a brenthaven bag.

the 17" notebook backpack version.
it is AWESOME.

i took it w/me when i went to China. protected my shizzle perfectly. :)

it's a nice looking bag too.

i like the ballistic nylon, which "self heals"

i got it from my work. i can probably save you a few bucks on it from my work.

also, check out mobileedge.com bags too. they are nice. i got one for free for selling so many of those bags. :)

Holy cow!

Those things *are* expensive! They look very nice, though, such as most other Swiss Army products. :)

How secure/protected is the laptop in the bag?

Thanks!

I have a Very Busy Man messenger bag made by Crumpler. It really does the job. Lots of padding. Got it at ebags.com for a bit less than 80 after their coupons that float around every so often as mentioned above.

I got it directly through the Apple Store.

Thanks!

That actually helps. I'm thinking that since they are built for Apple (the ones on the apple site anyways) I can't exactly use it for my thinkpad b/c of the special size specs that apple probably requested from Brenthaven...

:-/

I will keep searching around for local retailers.

Not at all!

If I can't find it locally (and I'd prefer to do that so that if I don't like it I can return it without shipping charges; chances are I won't find a local retailer though) I'll take you up on your very kind offer. :)

Did I miss something specifically?

Hope I didn't upset you.

wtf, i thought you wanted to spend 150 max

I'd say $150 is more than the average joe.

Most people I know would only spend $40-50 on a laptop bag/case.

$150 for a case or bag/backpack is really quite a bit of money, if you ask me. Of course, there's the Swiss Army bags -- $300. *wow!*

What kind of laptop do you have?

t40p :D

Best laptop I've ever had my hands on.

Plus, since I'm a poor college student and I worked so hard and long to earn the money to buy one, I kinda wanna take care of it :D

Do you know if this laptop will fit in the sleeve? I'm 99% sure it will, b/c the specs for the laptop on newegg are actually a bit smaller than the "maximum" size the sleeve is supposed to adjust to.

I'd buy one at the Apple store, but I'm not sure that it would fit since it's a custom 15" design that Brenthaven made for Apple.
