Laptop as a secondary computer

>>>>>Could use one to browse the net while gaming, IM convos, watch movies, etc etc.

Refurb dell or something from geeks or other refurb seller would probably get you the most bang for the lowest cost.

Or wait for the $500 laptop dujour to go on sale at your local B and M.

Or better yet for most of your requirements, get a second monitor for your desktop computer. A 19" LCD goes for about $250, and if your card does not support dual monitors out, well there's an excuse to upgrade your video card....

Check E-Bay also.

My solution is a second desktop - and that functions also as an indentical backup to the main unit. It also lets me do totally different things at the same time - even burn two CDRs at once. And, . . . desktops are usually cheaper than laptops.

I would get one of those $500-$600 new Centrino notebooks that pop up every now and then. Acer sells dirt cheap 15" Centrino notebooks with 4-cell batteries; could buy an extra larger battery.
