Laptop and computer equipments anti-theft thread and tips for college students.

Many of us as going to freshman very soon in about a week. I am pretty that that all of us are gonna either bring a desktop to the dorm or a several $K laptop. What are some good tips and tricks that will prevent our pricey computer equipments to be stolen. Everyone please share what you have.

Well, I think the same rules that help prevent your desktop from being stolen at home apply in the dorm. Don't leave the front door unlocked and be mindful of visitors you don't know. Make sure your roommate(s) understand your door and friends policies.

As for a laptop, don't leave it out of your site. Ever. Not even for a second. If you're extra nervous, you could install some software that "calls home" so you can get its IP. With that, you might be able to term serv to it or something. Consider storing your laptop under your bed when you're not using so your roommates loser friends don't get a bright idea in there heads when they are visiting and you're not around. (They may not steal it with your roommate there, but they may target it for a later date).

Don't underestimate the amount of stupidity your roommates friends will posess.

Oh yeah, hide the DVDs too. That a favorite target. Don't leave your 100 disc wallet sitting in plain view in your car. Don't lend DVDs to people. If you have to, WRITE DOWN who has it (trust me, it's easy to forget). Be careful about spreading the word you have a color printer. Don't let people take advantage of it. You're not an ink charity.

well said..so i guess to prevent my laptop from being stolen is to nEVER EVER LET IT OUT OF MY sight? How about storing in a locker?

Yeah i know the printer crap..pple soo take advantage of you, especially that they know u work for HP

Laptops are grade A theft fodder. I will be getting one and you can be sure I'll keep it either

1) hidden
2) in my backpack
3) near some very close friends

Use a soldering iron or an old woodburning tool to melt your name right in the top of your laptop. This will keep it from getting stolen and make it worthless at the pawnshop when you are short of cash. A kind of save you from yourself approach. After graduation you will be able to earn lots of money and afford a pretty new machine to impress everyone. Some laptops have the serial number on a sticker that can be removed. In such cases at least be sure you engrave the number where it can be seen. I would also suggest that in the future we all ignore those threads where someone can't get past the password protection on uncle Harry's old laptop. I'll bet that 99% of the requests we see for help involve a machine bought down behind the pool hall.
