I'm really unfamiliar with the world of laptops, but my sister has an HP 5000 series laptop she just got and it has an internal 56k modem, but no ethernet port and she needs one to connect to the internet. What kind of nic card would this thing take or does the laptop have to have a built in nic?

most laptops have two pcmcia slots in them for add-on cards. is her modem internal? if not, it's most likely taking up one slot. but either way, that leaves an open pcmcia slot.

any pcmcia network card would work in the laptop. they're more expensive than network cards for desktop computers, but work well. i've worked a lot with 3coms, netgears, and xircom's.
