I was thinking about getting just getting a Dell notebook like the Inspiron 6000, but I figured the posters here might have better advice for me. I want:

1. 15 inch or larger display
2. at least 1GB RAM
3. at least 80GB HD, but I already have an 80GB western digital in my current laptop which I could probably use in my new one (is that correct?)
4. CD/DVD burner

I'll just be using casually -- for MS word, listening to music, burning and viewing DVDs, and doing all this at the same time sometimes. I'd like to do it for under $1000, but could possibly spend as much as $1300.

Thanks very much for any advice on what to get and where to buy,
GM

You might should also consider the new Dell E1505, it can be gotten with the Duo core processor option. It pushes your max spending level a tad...but it might be worth it. Otherwise the 6000 is a very decent choice, my son has one and it has served him very well.

Look in the hot deals section or slickdeals.net (still on the front page) or fatwallet.com. Dell is running a sale on E1505 (the new version of 6000) with core duo, 512 ddr2 ram, 80gb (upgraded from 40gb), dvd burner for under $700 (requires coupon codes that are on that site as well).

The ram can be upgraded as well for $40 for another 512 stick from newegg or another retailer.

if the most he wants out of this laptop is to burn and play DVDs, does he really need an ATI X300 video card and XP media center?
