laptop AC socket repair?

I have a friend who has a Sony VAIO laptop, which has recently been suffering from a loose AC socket, along with the cocomitant problems of no battery charging, difficulty running on AC power.

Has anyone here ever disassembled a laptop to replace or re-solder the AC socket on a mainboard? I'm looking for some info on how involved this would be.

thanks

I took apart my wife's laptop which had the same problem (HP ZE4600). How did it go? Put it this way, I made a killing piece mealing it on Ebay! 😀

I don't know how hard/easy it would be on a Sony, but good luck!

This is a very common problem on laptops - usually caused by someone tripping on the A/C cord or pulling it out by the cord without grasping the connector itself. Sometimes it has to be replaced because it can't be soldered - it is a plastic housing and it gets broken.

What you can do is start weighing the costs of all the fixes, to include buying a replacement shell on E-Bay. Sending it to Sony is the most expensive option.

thanks for the suggestions guys....this isn't something I really want to do myself, but I'm her usual tech support guy, and I'm thinking she's going to want me to fix this. I'm fairly handy with a soldering iron if need be, but this is one job I'd like to pass on.

Here is a parallel thread (current) that had the same problem. The local repair option was good and it cost $150. Not a bad deal.
