Lappy wont boot to disk

MY friend's hard drive had been making bad sounds for a few days and finally bit the dust. After BIOS promts, the drive would crunch and grind for a bit, then just a blank screen.

So I replaced the hard drive and put a windows XP disk in the drive, rebooted, and now I'm getting: Operating System not found. I've already set the boot order to read the CD-Rom first, so it should be pulling up the windows setup system, but I always get this message. I've even tried the recovery disk that came with the lappy.

It's an HP Pavilion N5425
AMD Athlon 4
single DIMM 256MB
DVD-ROM

Man was it a b!tch to get the HDD out, had to remove the screen and then the keyboard to get to the HD caddy.

Any Ideas?

Pull the CD Rom drive and reseat it, maybe it came loose, got flaky during the HD replacement.

If it has a floppy, see if it will boot from that, If so use a Windows 98 boot disk and see if the CD / DVD Rom is recognised. and insert a CD to see if it can be read that way.

Try a USB CD Rom if you have one or can borrow one to install that way?

If you have a network, Share the CD Rom on a networ PC and do a network install.

I had a Dell once that had a flaky BIOS and wouldn't boot from the cd after setting it as the first boot drive, but I could press F12 to get a one time boot select menu to select the boot device.

Search HP's web site for this problem.

That is all I can think of for now. Except D@mn I hate HP Laptops!

weird, I'm not sure if the CD is getting read (the little CD LED is lighting up, but I cant hear if CD is spinning up)

the CD-drive isnt removable, so I dont think i jumbled it loose.

how would I go about a network boot? I've got my windows disk in a shared CD drive on my main rig. the boot order is setup so it should check HD last, network first...

the floppy works fine, but I havent got any win 98 stuff anymore. is it possible to make a boot disk for winXP (i know it is, but will I be able to install windows from there)? I could boot datalifegaurd utilies from Western digital just fine. formated the HD, but I still need to find a way to get XP on there.

I dont know anybody with an external CD rom.

any more ideas? (how to do network boot, I'm searching)

ok, I've found the windows program that makes floppy installation boot disks, but now I need to find 6 floppies, guess I've got to go to the store.

how about the network boot?
