looking for a gaming laptop, dells are too expensive, i found the asus's are quite good, the x1700 toting version, i managed to stuble upon this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220136
it apparently has a x2300...i found that intersting, not gonna buy it. but why does it have the x2000 series in it?

i was considering this laptop since it has some type of power behind it though http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220106R
for 1900 for a year to a year and a half isnt so bad...i spose....unless you guys can pick one for under 2000 with a good gaming video card.

Whatever you get I highly recommend a Pelican Case for it. Get one big enough for the Lappy, PS, Ext. HDD, and camera. It saved all of my stuff more then once over there during the rainy season and in dust storms.

Do they build a laptop with reactive armor yet? 🙂

Seriously, though... Get a Lenovo T60p. Those things are built like a tank!

My friend spent over a year there and his thinkpad has held up like a tank. I cleaned the sand out when he was home on R&R and replaced the keyboard.

I agree with the Lenovo ThinkPad reccomendation as well. A friend of mine was in Baiji for 12 months and Kuwait for another 4 with his Vaio and had all sorts of trouble, his CO had a T21 (thinkpad) that was already a few years old and it was still running great when they got back.

I did forget to add. I have a IBM ThinkPad t42 over there. My unit members had just about every brand of laptop made some new, some big, some expensive. Almost all of them survived. It depends on where you are going, what you are doing, and when you will be doing it.

If you have questions, PM me I might be able to help out a bit.

I wouldn't worry so much about a laptop being "tough". Its probably just going to sit in your room. However, random dirt particles will clog up everything on your laptop. No electronics survive this place in good condition.
