Lapping, what is it exactly, how do I do it, etc...

I have been reading that people are lapping their heatsinks. I am pretty sure that is sanding the metal down to create a better contact with the CPU.
How do I know if I need it? I have an OCZ Gladiator copper heatsink. If I need it how is it done?
What do I have to be careful about?

Thanks,
Mark

You've got it right. Just lap (sand it) until you can see yourself in the bottom of the HS! ;)

Seriously though, it's easy and only requires a little time and sandpaper. Get fine grit, like 800-1000. The only thing you have to watch out for is creating an uneven bottom that will prevent good contact with the CPU die. Welcome to Anandtech!

HERE is the finish I was able to acheive with a little patience and time. This is the surface of my Alpha PAL 8045 HS. :D

Good luck!

Wow...that seems to be a lot of work! I'm actually considering it though...just got my SK6 in the mail and have a friend coming over Thursday to install a few mods.
