Lapping the BX chipset???

I have an Abit BX6R2 and additronics 7896A...just got done modding the case fan cut outs to venturis, now I want to improve the motherboard cooling.

I lapped the gold/bronze heatsink on the BX chipset, but apparantly the chipset itself is bowl-shaped (thermal grease only on the edges of the heatsink. Is it worth worrying about? if so how do I lap an on-board chip.

Thanks

Chris

Gmmb, is it really worth it? I mean, what do you hope to gain from it? I think your P3 is already past its prime, much like my Celeron 566@850 on my trusty BH6 and the Addtronics 6896A is, so I've pretty much not bothered doing any extra modding since I finished the initial ones...

Well at 1.5GHz now on a Tualatin, I don't think I am out of the CPU running yet 🙂

In a week I am trying beyond 133MHz 🙂 Running 1.42 at default voltage.

Oh OK, you just updated your chiapet, before that it was showing a 900+MHz P3, which was why I questioned the need for the trouble. I guess with your current CPU it might be worth the extra effort, but I'd get a better video card than the TNT2 first 🙂

To answer your original question, I'd advise against lapping it, since there's almost no way you're gonna get a perfectly flat surface, because you're unable to apply equal pressure on the entire surface area of the chipset.

I agree with Goi, it would be almost impossible to get a good, flat lap on that northbridge chip. Just put a little more Arctic Alumina on the northbridge so that you fill in the air pockets under the northbridge hsf when you install it back on. It won't be quite as good as having both surfaces perfectly flat but the thermal goop definitely transfers heat better than air.😉

It may be easier to just conform the HS surface to the shape of the BX chip.

BTW, A Tualatin on a BX6??? How long have I been asleep? When did this happen? 😱

You must love your Abit BX6 more than I did mine. When the 815e's pulled into town I sent my BX packing. 😉

Well, I'm still hanging on to my BX-inside BH6, but I haven't done anything that crazy yet. Don't think I will either, since I'm upgrading soon once the dust settles on the Bartons and the P4 2.8GHz and higher...

I love my BX6 im still running the first version BX6 when it first came out, stunned by the jumperless FSB 🙂 I've never had a board last me this long look at all the CPU's i've gone through on this board:
Its gonna be hard too let go when i upgrade 🙁

Celeron 266@450 (cacheless) -> C366a@616 -> P2 450@550 -> C600@1200mhz -> now PIII 1000@1333
