Lapping Heatsinks

Are there any precautions I need to consider before I take some sand paper to the heatsink of my CPU?

Breaking pins.
Making the surface LESS flat than it was from uneven sanding.
Filings where they're not supposed to be causing a short.
Taking too much off (we're talking a few millimeters here) can screw up your heatsink contact on the 775.

Wait, I thought the sand paper was put to the bottom of your fan heatsink. Not to the cpu it's self. :Q

I Just read that article liked.
Holy crap. They took off the core's heatsink and had to put a blow tourch to the chip in order to remove it. CRAZY!

Can be done to either, depending on which needs it more.

Lapping the heatsink is safer, although it's still very possible to sand it unevenly and make things worse.

Can be done to either, depending on which needs it more.

Well, if it ends up not flat it'll have to to be convex, and that matches perfectly with the concave IHSs on the C2Ds. 😀

You say heatsink, but do you mean IHS?

Please specify because the CPU has no heatsink attached

I'm talking about my Venus 12 heatsink.

Use 1/4" plate glass or a dead flat floor tile and full sheets of wet-or-dry.
A well worn sheet of 800 grit is all that's needed to bring up a shine.
Use very soapy warm water.

I'm talking about my Venus 12 heatsink.

In that case it's easy. Just keep it on a 100% flat and smooth surface and work slowly. The guides linked are helpful if you want something step by step.
