I have a 1.2ghz AXIA thunderbird (9x133). I was wondering why people lap processors/ GPU's and if it could help me at all by doing it? Arent most of them pretty flat to start with? I am using a wbk38 heatsink with an 80mm fan mounted on top, i dont know the quality of this heatsink as far as smoothness goes... but anything to increase cooling without increased noise!

I think you (or someone) posted that link before. You're right it is a good read.

I was curious about the polishing step at the end. Isn't that going to leave wax or a coating behind? Does Iso Propyl Alcohol cut it?

Opinions about polishes on HS surfaces....... Thx in advance

Has anybody here ever lapped a WBK38? Any improvements? i notice that in this read it is a copper heatsink that they lapped. Would lapping a fully aluminum one use the same method and reap the same benefits?

what about lapping the actual processor, i believe i have heard of people doing that before.

That VH arcticle is actully a bad one

^ A recent post pointing all the wrongs, and a little more on the cleaning.

The GW WBK could use some lapping, same technic.
Lapping the processor itself was done alot in the PPGA days, when there was actully a fairly large platform to sit your sink on. Not so much of it done today cause the CPU cap is very fragile, and its very hard to lap that small cap without the tendacy of rocking.

Thanks Gizzo

My lapping techique would probably get me shot anyway. Between the sanding i use autosol metal cutting polish, then clean thoroughly with IPA. Seems to work
