lapping an slk800

what quailty of sand paper should be used to lap an slk800? also, is there a particular way to lap it or just go around in small circles? thanx

I used 4 types of sandpaper to lap my Alpha 8045, 600 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit and 2000 grit to get the final mirror finish. I placed it on an old glass cabinet door to get a flat smooth surface. you can read the guide Here Maybe that'll give you a better idea.

My understanding is that you only want to go in one direction, otherwise you make a curve in the surface. And stopping at 800 grit is better because there needs to be a place for the thermal paste in between the heatsink and cpu, otherwise heat transfer suffers. A mirror finish doesn't leave room for paste, and no paste means non optimal heat transfer.

I always thought that you only need the thermal compound because of surface imperfections, ideally you want surface to surface contact, the more you put in between the more heat transfer suffers.

Paste is to fill in the imperfections. I think the best way to do it if you have the time and patience would be to lap the HS to a 2000 grit mirror finish. Next, rub in a bit of AS3 to fill in the little bit of gaps left and then gently wipe off the AS3. Do the same with the AS3 to the processor as well. When I say wipe it off I mean just to the point that the surface is cloudy still from the AS3, not fully clean it.
