Does anyone know where I can download an windows based parallel port file transfer program? I'm trying to copy some files from a Win95 laptop to an Win2K desktop.

Thanks:D

It isn't possible to transfer data through a parallel port without either using a special cable (a la laplink) or a piece of hardware in between. This is because the IEEE 1284 spec doesn't allow enough bi-directional lines. If you search for "Parallel Port Data Capture" You will find a few different solutions.

If you feel like building your own piece of hardware, LPTCAP will let you capture data sent from the parallel port on one machine on your other machine, for about $20 in parts, as well as time soldering etc.

If you don't want to build anything, you can order a Silent Hawk II from JADTech Corp***. Capture software is availible for windows 9x. The purchase price is $995, but if you call, ask about a one month's rental. It should come to just over $100.

The disadvantages of both of those two systems is that you must manually send each file from the the host PC and manually name the file on the Capture PC side. If you have a lot of files, this will turn out to be a royal pain.

If you have a serial or USB ports on both PCs, look at PC synch (from laplink). It would be the easiest, I think. It sells for $79 or $99 depending on whether you download it or get it shipped to you.

If you only have parallel ports, then Laplink Gold would be your best solution. It sells for $129 or $169.

Hope this helps

*** In the interest of full disclosure, I currently work for JADTech corp. I tried to make this post as unbiased as possible; notice that I didn't recommend our own product ;)

Thanks Whiz. I've got the laplink line and a ~DOS-based program called ll3.exe but it hoses the titles of the files by shortening them. I was wondering if there was a FREE downloadable Windows based program that I could do file transfers with.

Since you're already using Windows, why not try Direct Cable Connection which is included in Windows as well?
