can someone explain this to me?

why the hate for this guy? does he suck as a coach? why the lulz? i don't understand...

The article posted by Queasy earlier in this thread is a good starting point for those not familiar with the guy.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=4820927

The guy's done pretty much nothing notable in college or the pros and gets a cushy USC head coaching job out of it.

It should be obvious why the Tennessee fans hate him.

And personally my lulz from the whole situation come from the Cryptkeeper Al Davis actually being correct in his assessment of Kiffin. I feel dirty just typing that last part.

My "lulz" come from the fact that Al Davis loves three things in this world:

  1. Oakland Raiders football
  2. Tennessee Volunteers football
  3. USC Trojan football
The fact that Lane Kiffin got the Tenn job despite Al Davis lobbying against him AND THEN got the USC job before Al Davis could lobby against him is priceless. It's almost like Lane Kiffin is a sophisticated death machine sent back through time with one purpose- piss Al Davis the hell off.

Being an SEC fan myself, I think UT is better off without him. I think the problem that the fans and students have is that he's walking away after one year which means they have to start over.
You're losing a head coach, offensive coordinator, and recruiting coordinator. That is HUGE, and possibly a good thing for the rest of the SEC. The SEC is full of passionate, yet myopic fans, and you can criticize them for their response; however, I don't think this is that far out of line with what goes on in other sports.

I think this is diverting attention away from the fact that Pete Carroll jumped ship to go to the NFL before he was slapped with sanctions, and more USC fans should be pissed about that, and concerned with how the program is going to adjust and continue to compete in a conference which is looking better every year.

It is fun watching the sporting world get their panties in a bunch over this guy. ESPN has done everything in their power to put this guy down all day.

USC has managed to assemble the best coaching staff in college football and this should make up for any of L.Kiffins shortcomings.

Fight On!

The best? Really?? USC is paying for who he brings with him, and not necessarily what he brings himself. That may qualify as good, but I doubt it's the best. It may take years to find out how good he really is, but in the meantime, you keep drinking that kool-aid while you can. ;)

Isn't going to do them a bit of good when the NCAA finally penalizes USC for the rampant cheating of both the football and basketball teams.

it'll get really bad if they ever decide to do REAL drug testing in the NCAA, which they should be for football and basketball

Kiffin hasn't done shit in his life...not on his own anyway.

At USC he was the co-offensive coordinator with Steve Sarkasian. Sark was the one who actually designed the offense and called the passing plays. Kiffin only called the run game.

With the Raiders Kiffin accomplished shit. Willing to give him a pass on this one. Although much of what Al Davis said about him when he fired him with cause has turned out to be true.

At Tennessee he was playing with someone else's recruits and only really had success because he brought daddy with him to run the defense. I'm guessing he will do the same at USA.

Kiffin is a fraud and the football equivalent of a gold digging whore. I'm to laugh my ass off when the NCAA finally brings the hammer down on USC for the Reggie Bush fiasco and little Lanie is stuck there to deal with it.

So, is daddy staying at TN?

NCAA sanctions should follow a coach where ever he goes.

Seriously? This is the guy who was last man out of the Oakland Raiders. I suppose the SC dynasty is officially over now. And they looked so promising in 2009 after whomping Ohio State in Ohio, then steam-rolling over Cal, in Berkeley.

I can imagine the SEC fans (who already hate USC) hating USC even more after this. I guess USC isnt scheduling UT OOC anytime soon. In all fairness I hope Tennessee find a good coach who can take their program forward. As a trojan fan I am very skeptic about hiring Kiff as the head coach. Hope he doesnt find his next dream job in the NFL after 14 months again

Those are some nice comments. Then again, this is the SEC we are talking about.

What rampant cheating was the football team doing?

Players getting illegal benefits, coaching done by outside "consultants." USC's defense on the players seems to be the "see no evil" approach. The NCAA often calls that "Failure to Monitor" or worse, "Lack of Institutional Control."
