Landlord wants to start charging $5 to be able to wash car on premesis?

Lucky

Got a note in my mailbox today from my landlords (old couple that lives next door) that "due to the high cost of water" in city (paid for by landlord) that I am no longer allowed to wash my car on the premesis. And if I want to go ahead and wash it anyways, they will charge me $5/wash.

I think they are doing this because I got a new car 2 months ago and I wash it about 2-3x every 2 weeks or so. Not a ridiculous amount, and I use one of those water saving trigger sprayers. But everytime I'm out there washing they will come by and say "you gonna wash the paint right off that new car!"! HAR DE HAR HAR HAR!

Can they do this? I have a six month lease and it's up in December. It's not in the lease and my lease makes no provisions for addendums like this, mutually agreed upon or not.

What do I need to do if this is not allowed? Simply slip a note in their mailbox and formally say that I do not agree because it's not in my lease? It's not like I'm going to be washing my car daily here in Michigan in October, but when it gets nasty with snow, I'd like to be able to shower the salt off before pulling it into the garage on occasion.

it seems a little excessive on both sides. i dont think ive washed my car 2-3x this year.
but i cant imagine it would be a gigantic drain on them. if you were showering 3 times a day they wouldnt know about it, right?

Welp, if you lease is up in December and you plan to move, tell them to shove it.

Is water/sewer included in your lease agreement? If so, which it seems like it is just because they wouldnt ask you for $5 a wash if you were paying for that, I'm pretty sure they're SOL.

I'd go talk to them and see if you can work out a compromise. Wash the car every other week and don't pay the $5. Let them know you use a water saving device and such as well since you could just turn on the hose and let it run the entire time you wash your car.

If they continue to be dumb about it, then I'd probably do exactly that. Leave the water running the whole time. Flush your toilet every time you pass the bathroom, take 60 minute showers, etc. Well. Probably wouldn't go that far but if they want to be jerks, then remind them that two can play at that game

But I'd also give a quick call to a landlord/tenant attorney and see what they tell you. If it's not in the lease I doubt they can do anything about it though.

$5 a wash is ridiculous. I could see an extra $10 a month or so.

Talk to them and try to educate them on the real cost of the water you use to wash the car. Or maybe you can tell them you'll pay for your water/sewer bill yourself from now on.

If they are unreasonable, move.

Pay the $5 dollars once, then leave all the faucets in the house on 24/7 and let the toilets run.

Wash it at 3am, making as much noise as possible. Pay them the $5. Leave all your faucets on the entire day you are at work/school.

how much does water cost ? It costs me $7 for 3 entire months of regular usage any season other than summer (lawn watering). They are just being old misers. And it's not like you're in CA.

Here in Portland, OR.. our water costs 0.0023 cents/gallon, or about 1$/435 gallons.

water here (south carolina) runs me around 47.00/month (just household water and the occasional 1 or 2/month car washing.. mother nature has taken care of the lawn/garden adequately, this summer). 5.00/wash does sound unreasonable but it might be relevant to see how much the water bill has increased since you got that new car and come up with some sort of compromise.

I don't expect they came up with this plan just to be jerks..

Leaving your water running all day as a means of vengence would make you an asshat.
But yeah, they're asking a bit much (though I also feel that washing 2-3x/2 weeks is a bit unecessary).

They are nice enough to pay for your water but you want them to let you wash your cars also? Stop being a cheapass and either pay for the water you use or go to a regular car wash.

Dude... lol...

Even if he had a giant hose, and let it run the whole half an hour he's washing his car, he wouldn't use 5$ worth of water.

It's a BS policy.

They are nice enough (or should be smart enough) to add a few extra $$'s to the lease to cover the water bill.

1. There is no provision for this "fee" in your Lease. As a matter of fact, the lease should state that they cover the cost of water. If they are competent landlords, they have figured water into the lease and have made adjustments accordingly as new leases are drawn up.

2. Do you plan on renewing your lease? If no then don't worry about paying them any additional $$. If you want to stay there be careful about pissing them off. They can not renew your lease or jack the $$ enough to make it a joke just to "get back at you".

Another idea is to make this offer: Tell them whenever your water bill is higher than theirs, you'll pay the difference.

i think they are overcharging you. talk it out. come to some kinda compromise. do your research...try to find out somehow how much water costs/gal in your area, and how much water you are using extra per week for washing your car. armed with that info, go and ask them to show you proof of increased water bill ever since you started washing your car. if they cant, tell em water is included in your lease and you wont pay anything extra. if you dont wanna be a d!ck, show em your research and offer them the fair amount of money.
