landline phone service required in order to have DSL?

I just cancelled Optimum Online - got fed up with the $49.95/mo fee and the fact that they capped me twice. The stupid girl told me I have to return the modem or be charged $50 even though the modem is mine (bought it from newegg). Finally some "specialist" took over the phone and said it is indeed my modem.

So to get DSL (looking at the Yahoo/SBC DSL 26.99/mo), do I have to get landline phone service too?

That depends on where you live. I believe Verzion offers Naked DSL and SBC has said no way.

Is the Naked DSL gonna cost more than 29.99?

"Naked" DSL? Is that a special version of DSL used only to download porn or something? :p

Odds are good that it will cost you more. I have a friend with a similar issue with his cable. He wanted broadband cable but he didn't want the actual cable tv portion. They told him fine but they jacked his rates. An extra $10 / month iirc.

Cavalier does something unique. You can get DSL from them, and then they will give you a phone line as VOIP. They claim that you avoid almost all taxes this way. We'll see how long it lasts.

This is pretty bad, I just got in to work and the first thing I'm doing is replying to an anandtech thread.

but anyways, I called sbc up a few months back when I was considering getting vonage service and asked what would happen if I canceled my phone line and they told me the 26.99 is a package discount for people with phone and dsl, she said they would raise my dsl montly rate to something like 44.99 I think.

From a technical point yes it is possible. I cancelled my phone service and DSL service. My dsl line worked for two days after they disconnected my voice phone.

From a business point of view it will depend on the company. Just as with cable, I subscribe to basic cable just to get the broadband cheaper. I would pay more for just the broadband than I do for basic cable and broadband combined.

Yea naked DSL costs more, I'm not familiar with your area but Qwest offers it, it costs $33 as opposed to $28 (that is without the ISP). So basically there is a $5 premium for not having a phone line through them.

i'm in richmond, va on comcast and they require cable with the cable modem, so we get "limited cable" which is locals, pbs, weather, some various crap like nasa channel and a country music station (wtf?) but the limited cable is only $8 a month

As you saw Voice is not needed for DSL to work.

Hysterical and sad when BellSouth had it's Louisiana President say in public that it is not Engineeringly possible to have DSL work without voice.

BellSouth Louisiana is now currently fighting City of Lafayette Louisiana from installing it's own City wide Fiber Optic Network to each home since BellSouth has been too lazy to add DSL.

The U.S. is very sad when it comes to Broadband and Technology in General now, it is all about making the maximum amount of dollars. If the current atmosphere existing when the Telephone or Electricity was invented, hardly anyone except the richest in the cities would have electricity and telephone.

I don't know about where you live, but BellSouth does not offer "naked" DSL service. You have to get phone service, too.

That doesn't bother me too much, though. My wife makes ALOT of international phone calls, and they are cheaper on a land line than a cell phone.

I totally agree. The broadband situation is just PATHETIC in the US. Too few competition. In northern NJ, I was told many places can't get verizon DSL and there is only one choice for them: Cablevision. This is basically monopoly.

Down here in Florida, probably because there's so many broadband solutions, you can get DSL without dial-tone. I even have some customer's that have one company for DSL and another for dial-tone simply because one company offers a better rate on one than the other. ;)
