I dont think my ass can handle being rode any harder than it already is.
:hmm:

You should work on your jaw muscles and gag reflexes to give your ass a break. My girl says that if you feed them pineapple the seamen won't taste so bad.

and how dangerous is it?

http://www.dodsonhooks.com/Articles...ers-of-the-High-Seas-Tug-Boat-Accidents.shtml

This article says it's a very dangerous job. 23 fatalities per 100k workers doesn't sound like a high number. Maybe I'm mistaken?

Merchant mariners hold one of the most dangerous jobs in the nation. There are a reported 23 fatalities per 100,000 workers, often from drowning. These accidents have many causes, including collisions between barges as they are lashed together and the simple difficulties of working on treacherous waters.

I'm just curious.

1) Is it difficult to get a tugboat job?

Yes, very difficult. I focused on two companies and called them every week for 2 - 3 months.

The marine industry is one of the few places you do not need a college degree and can make $100k after 4 - 5 years.

2) What credentials do you need?

TWIC and Merchant Mariner Credential.

After I get my able bodied seaman I will be making close to $50k a year and only working 6 months a year.

Were you making less than that in IT? Damn.

What do you plan on doing the other six months? Travel? Work another job?

Making a lot less than that in IT.

Probably go fishing, hiking, work on the farm,,,, in my free time.

Six months is a loooong period of downtime. I'm surprised you wouldn't find some other job to do, especially if you're making less than before.

Or maybe you're trying to convince us (or yourself) that working one week on, one week off constitutes only working six months per year. Yeah, right.

How many miles do those average per day? I saw one go through a lock near where I work once, seems like it would take forever to go anywhere.

It is called equal time. You work a day and you get a day off. This type of work brings true balance between work and family.

I can not help it if you have been conditioned to think you have only 2 days off a week. This is how people should work. Everyone should get a day off for everyday they work.

Not that many miles. To go 10 miles might take 6 hours. The other night we were behind a ship that was moving at 4 knots.

My first job was on a push tug where we pushed a barge.

The new job is on a harbor tug, we dock the ships that come into port.

Did you lose your IT Job? This seems an unusual field to get into.

It sounds awesome to be able to get out of IT and actually do something. I am so tired of sitting in a chair all day.
