He worked at a gas station and he watched people use firebombs earlier. Did you see Day of the Dead?

Regarding the thinking zombies, you're completely missing the point of this movie. It is an evolution of the ideas presented in previous movies. Why do the zombies come to the mall in Dawn? Because they continue to act out in death what they were programmed to do in life. They're like computers, only capable of doing what they've been programmed to do - no true independent thought.
I agree 100% with you analysis, but the implementation was just pretty lame. We didn't really need to see "smart" zombies. To me, it was just as disappointing as running zombies in Dawn '04.

I didn't like Big Daddy growling all the time, it was supposed to be funny but it just got annoying. The separation of rich and poor was lousy. Why would people be walking around in ties in their own homes? Why would Fiddler's Green need to advertise on TV if nobody can get in? Too much action, explosions, missiles, CG, etc. Not enough day scenes either. The scariest part of Dawn was the fact that you were not safe in daylight. I don't remember seeing one day scene with zombies.

Asia Argento is hot though.

I was disappointed by this movie, Dawn of the Dead was waaaaaay better IMO.

The ending just seemed like such a let down.

BTW I'm a huge fan of horror movies and zombie movies, I see them all and this one looked so promising but for me just ended up feeling like a let down.

There we have it. This movie is a let down for die hard zombie fans.

Blah, that's two opinions. I choose to disagree.

Actually, I think with LOTD that Romero has perfected both his horror and social commentary threads, with a movie as scary as Night of the Living Dead (Dawn was a good movie, but not scary at all) and better social commentary than Dawn.

The ending just seemed like such a let down.

Romero typically lets a few people live in his movies, so while I prefer the DOTD04 ending, I'm not sure why LOTD's ending was a let down.

Sadly I've had this conversation before, I recommend you shack up in your nearest super walmart, eat all the perishable (sp) food in the first week and then live off canned stuff.

POS forums, I had written a long post and now it's gone, WTF.

All I did was open up my documents...

Anyway, in short, the movie was ok. It kinda sucked and took away from the zombie theme by having them think. I know it follows the pattern of the last few movies, but it still is a retarded idea. And it's not a very believable scenario.

I saw it last night with my gf. We went to the late show and were the only people in there! I half expected a zombie filled theater when we came out.

There were a couple details that didn't matchup and I thought were lame. But over all... I'm still expecting zombies to break in somewhere.

SPOILER

Edit: I'd see it in the theater, for that one scene where the zombies first get in the city and the people relize it when some building blows up. The whole room shook at that, and when they'd fire the fireworks. Might of had something to do with no people being in the room....

I enjoyed this movie. My fiance was totally grossed out by the gore, which was over the top in a traditional romero fashion.

Given that the running time was only an hour and a half, I would have liked to see more realistic (and therefore drawn out) dialog introducing the 'state of things' in the beginning. There was to much stuff like "Why do we use fireworks?" "Because they can't take their eyes off them." No one would ask that question, it was purely for the audiences benefit. The fact that they built a giant truck that fires fireworks into the sky means its common knowledge that zombies love fireworks. It should have been introduced in a different manner, because it detracts from the whole script. I didn't buy asia argentos character...to generic and pop culture. "The hooker with the heart of gold". There were a few other minor plot issues I had.

Unlike others here...I loved the evolution of the zombies concept. From the little I had read I'd expected there to be a group of super zombies that could talk and formed a group to attack the humans. I did not like the sound of that at all. I was happy to see it was as simple as one zombie, that for whatever reason, had maintained a higher level of brain function after death. The zombies in ALL the films have shown a propensity for group mentality and functioning. They always cluster together. So its perfectly plausible to me that one smarter zombie could lead them. I enjoyed watching him clumsily overcome obstacles he initially didn't understand through observational learning, like some sort of cave man. My only complaint there was it had a base case of braveheart/patriot syndrome. Despite being on the front line always, through some stupid luck he never caught a bullet in the head.

What I want to know is how that one black zombie, and the chick zombie wit the effed up jaw, made it so far when they were at the front of the zombie mob. I mean, comeon, shouldnt they have been shot first?

I don't understand how it is getting good ratings I thought it was pretty cookie cutter and corney. I know zombie movies are supposed to be corney but the original Dawn of the Dead was an actual good movie. It all felt like it was trying to be like every other movie out now, they should have just thrown Vin Diesel in it and put a few more explosions throughout.

I also liked the zombie developement, although I took it as a kind of social commentary on Romero's part. Some aspects like that made me see it as a representation of social hierarchy, like in the begining when the two are talking, "Maybe we're the zombies"...

Zombies: like lower class, unknowing (~mindless), feeding off the middle class (fighting survivors, ala welfare or other social support), doing what they do because that's what they do (pumping gas but can't find the car...)

Fighting Survivors: like middle class, doing the work for the upper class (risking life and limb for a case of booze), afraid of becomming the lower class (turning zombie),

Posh Survivors: like upper/ruling class, enjoying the top, not ever really in harms way (untill the lower class "revolts" or bashes the glass in with a jackhammer),

Then again, maybe I read between the lines a bit too much. The gore was pretty thick. I was actually grossed out a couple times. Been a while.

I think what I read as the social commentary in the movie took abit away from the Survival Horror/"Zombie flick" aspect to it, but I think it added alot more to it as far as story depth. I liked the '80s cyberpunk throwback feel in the first part of the movie, it was funny in a nostalgic way to me. Kinda reminded me of Return of the Living Dead.

Damn good movie, and I love Romero's style.

You were the one that coined the "social commentary". I wondered why I all of a sudden thought of it as that.

Do you "die hard zombie fans" even know there was an "original" Dawn? I was dissapointed that there wasn't any reference to it at all in the movie or features on the DVD. I wonder why that was.

Eh... I hear everybody talking about pirates and ninjas and zombies, and it doesn't seem like anyones got any real heart for the undeadz...

I *still* have nightmares from when I was a kid. (/zombie on sleve)

i agree.
i love zombie movies but the heart of his originals works is not there with this one.
social commentary? the audience is beat over the head with trite class-warfare garbage from characters we see all of 10 minutes.
maybe there were some hardcore cuts in the editing but i certainly prefer almost any other zombie film to this one. there were maybe two or three interesting moments in this film.

Because Romero spoke out several times on how DotD '04 sucked. It was just a cash grab anyway.
