Lance Armstrong's new team title sponsor?

US Postal Service leader Lance Armstrong has returned to the United States following the Dauphiné Libéré to participate in a team press conference outside Washington, DC. Tuesday at 3pm (EDT) an announcement will be made at the Silver Spring, Maryland headquarters of Discovery Communications, a global media company which owns several cable television networks including the Discovery Channel, TLC, and Travel Channel.

US Postal Service team officials declined to comment on the nature of the announcement, but the location and timing suggest that Discovery Communications could be taking over as title sponsor for the team after the postal service's contract expires at the end of 2004. Armstrong himself has commented in recent weeks that if a new sponsor were found to continue the team in its current structure, he would continue racing in 2005.

John S. Hendricks, founder and CEO of Discovery Communications, is an avid sports fan and in 1999 formed the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the premier women's soccer league in the world. Hendricks has served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of WUSA.

Cyclingnews will have full coverage of the announcement on Tuesday.

Isn't this old news? Oddly enough, I saw a commercial the other day. Damned if I remember what it was for, maybe Nike. But at any rate, Lance was in it wearing the USPS jersey and this was the first thing that came to mind.

Lots of news coverage for Lance coming up to the Tour this year; hope he's focused, rather than thinking about 2005, or fighting libel in court. 😛

Nope. This just appeared today. There have been rumors that some "large corporation" was going to pick up the sponsorship, but no indication who that might be until today.

i can't imagine him racing another full season, especially if he wins the tour this year. going out on top as the winningest tour rider ever would be the ultimate exit.

props to him if he sticks it out.

it would be nice if the discovery channel would carry the tour. OLN is nice but it's not included with basic satellite or cable.

I think he'd like to spend a season or two focusing on the one-day classics instead of the Tour. You really can't do both in modern cycling.

Cyclist Lance Armstrong to fight doping allegations

PARIS (AP) - Weeks before he shoots for a record sixth Tour de France win, Lance Armstrong's lawyers said Tuesday that allegations in a new book about him are untrue, that he denies having taken performance-enhancing drugs, and that they are preparing legal action.
In a statement, lawyers representing the five-time Tour champion said the Texan "reacted with consternation and firmness at the false allegations" in the book, "L.A. Confidential: The Secrets of Lance Armstrong."

"Our client vigorously denies having taken any product with a view to improve his performances," said the statement. Armstrong has never failed a doping test.

The lawyers said they were launching libel proceedings in France and Britain against authors David Walsh and Pierre Ballester, as well as the book's publishers and publications that reprinted extracts and allegations from the book, which hit Paris shops on Tuesday.

In it, a former staff member with Armstrong's team claims that he asked her to dispose of used syringes and gave him makeup to conceal needle bruises on his arms.

But Emma O'Reilly, an Irish woman who worked as Armstrong's "soigneur" - a combination masseur, physical therapist and assistant - also acknowledged in the book that she did not know what was in the syringes.

O'Reilly also claimed that team staffers forged a prescription that got Armstrong off the hook for using a skin cream for saddle sores that contained glucocorticoid, an anti-inflammatory steroid.

Armstrong is aiming this July to become the only cyclist to win the Tour six times. Currently, he and retired Spanish great Miguel Indurian are the only riders to have won cycling's showcase event five times in a row. The three-week Tour starts July 3.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Are you kidding? Lance is one of the most recognizable sports figures around these days. Advertise, people use your stuff, you generate revenue.

Well its now confirmed...

June 15, 2004

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Five-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong's cycling team has a new sponsor -- the Discovery channel.

Discovery Communications said Tuesday it will replace U.S. Postal Service as title sponsor beginning next year. Armstrong's new team will be called Discovery Channel Pro Cycling.

Under the agreement, Armstrong will serve as an on-air personality on Discovery's networks. For the rest of the year, Discovery will sponsor the team with the placement of the Discovery logo on the team jerseys.

Armstrong will attempt to win his sixth consecutive Tour de France next month and also announced Tuesday he will race in next year's showcase race.

``Lance is a role model known for determination, integrity and a spirit that never gives up,'' Discovery Communications president Judith McHale said. ``There is no better ambassador for quality and trusted information than Lance Armstrong.''

i know how ads work, but US postal was a team long before they had a famous rider, and NO ONE watches cycling in the US.

Well, that's partially true, but extraordinary riders can do well in both the Classics and the Grand Tours in the same season. Remember Laurent Jalabert's 1995 season? He won Milan-San Remo, Fleche Wallone, and Paris-Nice to mark a great Spring campaign, and then went on to win the overall and the points and mountains competitions in the Vuelta. He also won the green jersey that year at Le Tour. That guy was awesome - one of my favorite riders.

To promote international USPS services.

Except there aren't any. USPS doesn't have any facilities outside the US. Packages sent overseas are sent to the local couriers. It's not like UPS or Fedex which run the whole show from your local mailbox etc to the destination address in Russia. USPS international mail works very differently. Profit generation from international mail has always been a small factor. USPS needs to focus on domestic packaged mail, an area totally dominated by other carriers and increasingly so in the past few years. Sponsoring a cycling team that is viewed mainly by people outside the US just doesn't make any sense.
