Previously I networked my Athlon 800 with my bother's
Pentium 233MX. We want to share a satellite internet connection.
Sandra reports a througput of 1124kp/s. Both machines
have 10/100 generic cards and 1 are connected via a 4-port
generic hub. The computers are approx 1200 ft apart, good thing
I didn't read until now the limit is supposed to be 300 ft.
My questions are; should I be getting better throughput and will
what I have be sufficent for the internet connection.

If you don't use the network too heavily (e.g. to the extent of saturating it) and won't have more than 10 PC's using it at one time all with heavy network demands you'll be fine. If that were the case the first thing you should let go is your hub. A switch will give you better performance and less collissions (i doubt things will even collide then)

Damn, how big is your house? or did you just have to run the cable around the outside or something.

Our houses are that far apart. We used a sub-soiler attached to a tractor to lay the cable about 8 inches deep. It's been down for about 5 years now. It has worked well but I'm not sure if it is fast enough for the satellite internet connection.

I have another question, can our son's voice chat over the lan as they game? I know they won't be able to game over the satellite connection due to the inherent latency.
