Every year my brothers and I get together at my house for christmas lan gaming and four or five of us pretty much live in the spare bedroom gaming all day. (The wives have finally gotten used to this ) Anyway I have a whole list of FPS games that I will be running off of a server, but last year we tried a WWII flight game which was pretty fun. This year I am looking for something with modern planes. I stress that none of us ever want to be pilots so we're trying to find something that would be pretty simple to play.- just fly around, shoot a bit and be done with it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

I think it's a flight simulator only. Although I wouldn't be suprised if it has dogfighting extensions, not that a simulation would be fun.

but he has a space combat thing going.

Otherwise I don't know.

So is there anything else besides XPlane?? I seem to remember another one around, I think it was a game with Russian Jets but I don't remember the name.

Lock On: Mobern Air Combat features modern aircraft and supports LAN play. I haven't tried it, so this isn't an endorsement, but there's a demo available, so maybe that's what you're looking for?

How about Crimson Skies? It features prop planes, but it's more 'arcade-y', and you can do custom plane designs. Pretty fun game.

I had a hell of a lot of fun with it, single player. The graphics aren't bleeding edge, but the handling of the aerial vehicles is tight. I think I might break out my copy and try it on my LAN ... =) Thanks

Crimson Skies would be fun for LAN play and it also lets you design your own planes.

There are plenty of WW2 flight sims like Combat Flight Sim 3. I tested a bunch of WW2 flight sims for LAN play a year or so ago so I'm a bit foggy, but I never found one that lets you add bots to free for all or team play so it will just be you and your bros flying. If I recall correctly some of them like IL-2 let you fly cooperative missions though.

Definitely not. I tried it and it's definitely a realistic flight sim. Even if you could LAN it and have dogfights, I don't think you'd want to.

If you want something that is fairly easy to pick up, Battlefield 1942 is a good choice. It's definitely on the arcadish side. I'm not a flight sim expert, but to me, BF seems to have pretty realistic physics. Much more realistic than some space combat games I've seen, but still very simple to learn. You can even fly pretty easily with mouse and kb, although I prefer joystick.
The controls are simple. No raising the landing gear, extending the flaps, etc., etc.

If you are interested, dl the multiplayer demo and see what you think. The sp demo is a map that doesn't have any planes, so make sure you get the mp demo. If you like it and end up buying it, there are some good maps for dogfighting, but most of the maps will be too big for less than 16 players.

If you want more modern planes, check out the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield. F16 vs Mig can be a lot of fun on some of the smaller maps. The only problem is that each map only has a certain number of planes and another one won't respawn until one is destroyed. There might be a way to change that in the server settings, but I'm not sure.

The last page lists all of them and their corresponding platform. Though some are multi-platform but not listed as such, it seems it defaults to PC.

What about Jane's? (I really don't know - all I can do is advise you to stay away from any MS sim and XPlane - they would be WAAAAAAAAAAAY too realistic.) The only other thing that comes to mind is Flightgear - I downloaded it for linux, but haven't installed it yet. Maybe that's too "serious" though also - again, I really don't know.

Pretty much the only arcade flight sim is Crimson Skies.

Unless you want to find Red Baron somewhere.
