ok... thats the strangest thing I have ever seen. I recently set up a LAN in my home to share a DSL connection. It is working perfectly all right, with internet running on the client computer. My OS is Win98 SE and I am using sygate. The client OS is WinME. I am using my computer as gateway for the internet. The problem is that the two computers (mine and the client) can't access each other through the LAN. I can't find the other computer on my network neibourhood neither I can search for it. I can ping the other computer and the other computer can ping me with no problems. But we cant see each other on the LAN. Can't share files and drives and printers. My friend brought his laptop and we tried with his laptop and it works perfectly. I have tried everything I could think of. I think there is something wrong with that particular computer. But I can't figure out what. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What protocols are you using? If only TCP, what IP addresses are being utilized? Are both of your computers in the same workgroup? What about the subnet for both of them? I'm assuming your gateway machine has two nics.

i am using TCP/IP with IP address of gateway is 10.0.0.1 and that of client is 10.0.0.2. Sygate has a built in DHCP server which automatically assigns IP address to clients and it does so perfectly. Yes, the gateway machine has two NICs. I have also installed NETBEUI and IPX, i know they are not needed but just in case.

OK so the ME client can see and share things from the 98 box? Or is this also not possible?
If 98 and ME can only ping and do nothing else, while the laptop was able to see everything on 98 without any problems, try replacing the cable from the ME box to the hub/switch and/or try different ports on the hub/switch.
It looks like the ME box can use the internet? If so, I guess it would not be a bad cable. What happened when you hooked the laptop up to the network with the ME box? were you able to see everything fine? Do you have the same protocols on both machines and in the case of the gateway computer, are they bound to the correct nic? You should only have one copy of NetBEUI and IPX and that would be on the internal nic. Can I suggest removing one of these two protocols? No sense cluttering up the network with redundant stuff.

i didnt try the ME client and the laptop together. I tried Win98 gateway and the laptop with same cables and everything was working, including file sharing in both machines. At that time my roommate(who has the WinMe box) was out of town and I was not supposed to touch her computer. So I wanted to try everything out with my friend's laptop so that everything should be ready when she comes back and we wouldnt have to do any testing. So everything was working fine with laptop including internet sharing and file sharing. The laptop also has WinMe installed in it. But when I tried the same settings with the WinME desktop, the internet sharing is working fine but the LAN is not working. And this really makes me confused and surprised and clueless.
