LAN party server requirements...... 8MHz per client.... is that really enough of a system?

I read on LANparty.com that generally speaking a game server should have approx. 8MHz of processor speed for each client to be hosted by the server.

Taking into account the OS requirements would reduce the actual number of clients able to join the game. Therefore a 400MHz 256Mg RAM system should be able to host in the nieghborhood of 40 to 45.

I was wondering how this formula is holding up to your actual demands......... Thanks.:D

That really depends on the game....

Also don't try running a 4 person server with 32 MHz .... won't be pretty :)

That guide over at lanparty.com is getting outdated in terms of specific numbers, technology, etc. I find that 20Mhz/player is much more realistic with today's games. I ran a UT server on a 400 Mhz celeron box and it was maxed out (CPU wise) at 20-24 players. I imagine a Q3 would be close to that in terms of players and performance.

It seemed a bit to low to me.....
Todays games have just to much happening to run that tight a ship.

Need to get/build a machine to serve the games on at my growing parties.

Am thinking of just buying a dell server out of box so I have the warranty as I'm no techy by any means.

When you have 15-20 gamers all playing on the same server, if it's not a dedicated machine--------- LAAAAAAAAAAG city baby!:(
