OK this weekend a few of my friends and I are getting together for a LAN Party. There will be six of us playing. However I only have a 4 port Router (Link sys). One of the guys coming has the same router, can I plug 3 of the computers into my router, then with the extra port go to his router, and then run the other three computers off that? Will I see any ill effects of doing it this way? Or is there another way to do it better with out going and getting an 8 port gigabit router :D.

thanks

um well you need a crossover cable to go from router port to router port and the 2 boxes will argue over who the DHCP server is. Cheaper is a 10MB hub on ebay (maybe $15) I say 10MB cause few games require more than a 56K connection the ones that do are happy on a 1.5MB cable so why go high end and never use it ... unless you plan to grow to more than a school classroom of people.

Turn off dhcp on one of the routers. Call that one router 2. Connect the routers. Do not use the wan port of the second router for anything. Use the uplink feature of router 2 if it has one, or a crossover cable if not. The internet comes in via the WAN port of the first router, and the second router with dhcp turned off is now just a dumb switch.

Will a hub work? My brother has a 12 port hub, but I was affaid it would do what we need it to do.

If it does work thanks skyking for the explaination of how to get my current set up to work.

I would seriously recommend against purchasing any switch or hub that does not support 100MB/s or faster. I have LAN parties all the time with my buddies, and it always seems that a good deal of time is spent transfering files around from people's computers. With 10MB equipment, this would be a nightmare.

well proper planning makes a 10mb work .. most games can work on a 56K dial up so 10 mb can do (56K / 10 mb = 176.5 connections) I don't think he has the room for that many let alone most switches are 24 port. if you get one with a 100mb upload port for the server the transfers won't be a problem. but for a small lan party, borrow the hub and run.

as for file transfers ... just bring the CD-Roms...and patches should really be applied before they leave for the party.

I would think that a 10Mbps switch would be alright. If you had a hub this might be a nightmare since they suck up a lot of bandwidth needlessly.

I'm sure this isn't a great quality switch but it should be perfectly suitable for a LAN party.

Thanks. That looks like exactly what we need. I bought one. It won't be here for this time around, but for less than 16 bucks it will be ready for next time.

Depending on where you live it might get there in time.

I've bought many things from buy.com with free shipping and had them arrive the next day.

I have a switch pretty much idential to this from TrendNet. I will say hands down, this is the best switch I have ever seen for the price. I have had it running on my network non-stop 24/7 for the past 2 years without a single hiccup. Best $30 I have ever spent. Best of all, no crossover cables are needed when going from switch to switch as the ports are auto-sensing, atleast on mine.
