At organized LAN parties, do people usually use IPX/SPX or TCP/IP? Since yesterday, it was a whole mix up and we sat there playing one game and the others, another cause we couldn't see each others servers.

Most use TCP/IP. Serious LAN Parties have IP's either dynamically assigned (DHCP) or you are given an IP upon registration.

Someone needs to get on the ball and set PC requirements, Network settings, game settings, etc. Some sort of organization heirarchy ( a manager, boss, owner, ect.) and set ground rules for established game playing because without a standard you could have a Cisco switch with 100Mbit full duplex ethernet but you will be all dressed up with no one to frag.

Here in So. Cal, the Lan parties that I attend (Ownij and Hatlan) almost always use TCP/IP w/DHCP enabled.

You can check out their respective websites here:

TCP/IP all the way. The only games that use IPX/SPX are like early red alert/CnC and there was another game, i cant remmeber that sometimes got played. But all the big games, half life (cstrike), quake, ut, etc etc are all IP based.

DHCP makes life very easy as long as everyone is set to obtain an iP# automatically, otherwise win98/me pc's will auto set their own IP# with out a DHCP server and it can start to get messy :)

the omnigamers.com link doesnt work, but our other page is here

Where've you been? It only takes a few minutes to break down our set-up, and just as long to put it back together. It's really not that difficult. Plus I'm going to have a non-gaming lan party soon, in order to learn Win2k well enough to get my MCSE, so its not always just games.

TCP/IP.

When me and friends usually do it, if it's at one of their houses (granted their parents' permission), we all end up specifying.

but when we do it at my house, and, since my DHCP server is running 24/7 (along with hosting a web site), it's all dynamically given.

w00t. sounds like your first LAN party. have fun. i have one tomorrow, but i'm too sick to go.
