alright, i've been running a (about)bi-monthly small lan party for 8-12 people... everyone has a good time however, the biggest complaint is the variety in games... it seems that we always end up playing mostly first person shooters (UT, Q3, Ghost Recon, Jedi Knight)... RTS' mostly have a max of 8 people or so... so my question is this... what games have YOU had experience in playing at a lan party that wasnt an FPS, and enjoyable? Any suggestions would be helpful.
 
OT, but how do you have the space to host a LAN for 8-12 people? Just curious. And jealous.

I'm a 99% FPS gamer myself, but I'd imagine one of those RPGs like Diabolo or Neverwinter Nights or something like that would be fun.

Everyone there though has to WANT TO play a game liek that , though.

IMHO, LANs are for FPS games though! Beer+Pizza+lots of screaming and cussing over the sounds of guns, lasers and tripmines=BIG FUN!
 
The only non-FPS multiplayer game I can think of would be something along the lines of RTS. For instance, 16-playered hacked StarCraft maps.

seriously, I got it yesterday because my friend had it and said it was awesome, so we played for like 8 hours online 1 vs. 1........sooooo much fun!
 
Counter-Strike, Quake2 CTF (like the good old days..), Quake3 CTF with ThreeWave custom CTF maps, Age of Empires II, etc. I've ran more than my share of LANs.. the one I hosted June 15th will be my last, though. It's a lot of work and I finally paid off the equipment and such (switch, 20Amp rated cables, etc) 🙂

By the way I have a 24-port fully managable SMC TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 capable w/ VLAN support that I used for my LANs that works excellent (40+ persons) if anybody is interested. I can also lend a hand with tips on hosting a good tournament and other LAN sponsorships and stuff if anybody needs any help 🙂 Just PM me.
 
no we always end up playing FPS

tryed a Nascar game one time we went back to Quake. Tryed Starcraft one time went back to Quake.

I haven't been to a LAN since 1999 though 🙁
 
used to love to play need for speed 3 hot pursuit. used to have a contest to see who could go the most hot pursuits without getting 3 tickets. one guy running and all the rest of us chasing him in cop cars. we used to have some amazing races. Still wish i had a recording of my all time best hot pursuit escape. I got far enough ahead of the cop and turned around and went head on at him. As he was approaching the hills to drop down to the covered bridge i was coming up the hill and hit the rise at about 140mph went airborne and jumped right over the top of him head on. The guy literally fell out of his chair yelling when i did that. Ah the memories😎. Unfortunately nfs3 won't work in xp and PU doesn't have the hot pursuit mode in it.🙁
 
Seriously... do you really need anything more than Counter-Strike?

For 8-person RTS... AOE/AOK/AOC are great. I haven't found any RTS I like better. Age of Myth should be coming out before too long.

Yes, Counterstrike is terrible. Completely over rated.

MichaelD: Heh, I've got a fairly large furnished basement that we can squeeze the 12 into... it gets a little warm, as my central air doesnt have a duct down there.

We've played starcraft at some of the parties, however it has been banned from further play, ever since the 'incident'.

NFS3 really wont work in XP ? 🙁 that sounded like a grand idea...




 
i suppose not fps only diablo2... but thats only for 8 ppl too

but MOHAA, CS, DOD, Quake, Unreal etc are not for only 8 ppl u can definitely have 12 in any of the afforementioned games (except for diablo)

how about heroes3 or worms? lol 😀
 
If you're all in the same room, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and "Hidden and Dangerous" can be brilliant.
H&D is still sort of FPS, and Commandos is still sort of RTS, but they are more team-oriented where you all have to work together to complete a mission, and each player has a narrow role that they must carry out.

You'll be at each other's throats when the driver who doesn't have much to do except duck and cover for the first bit of a mission tries to be a hero and gets himself killed.
It's a lot of fun.

We had a 4v4 battle... all of us (save one) are casual gamers (read: we like long drawn out games of starcraft and like to take our time amassing an army... a good starcraft game to us, is about 3 hours long). The 'one' person that wasnt a casual gamer, played protoss and basically sucked up the entire maps resource limit in a very short timeframe (we set a 'build time limit', couldnt attack for 1/2 hour...but after about 20 minutes, we couldnt build any more units, and most of us hadnt really build a big army). Basically the kid turned it into a very boring game where he walked over everyone... then wouldnt shut up about 'how sorry' he was... he said it about 20 times, almost like he was rubbing it in, not being genuinely sorry... that happened at about midnight... for the next six hours or so, we all just didnt have a good time. Probably a 'you had to be there' moment, but to this day, we still cringe.

Warcraft 3 is actually planned for the next party... as it comes out next week 🙂 i cant wait!

 
Jzero: how many people can play co-op in commandos? the official site says 6 commandos in the single player.. is that the same in multi?

Also, any WORMS game is well worth playing. I guess they count as turn-based strategy.
