My friend Brad and I are interested in hosting an eastern PA lan party sometime between mid-july to mid-august. I was wondering if anyone here has ever hosted a large (40+ people) lan party? I have a couple questions that I wasn't able to get answered from lanparty.com :

What kind of servers are needed to handle more recent games than Quake 1 and 2? Lanparty.com's guide says that a dual P2 300 is good enough to host multiple game servers, and maybe that was true in the Quake1 days but I can't see how that's possible with newer games like UT2003, Serious Sam, Battlefield 1942, etc.

What kind of games are most people playing at lan parties these days? I want to have a set list of games beforehand and leave a powerful enough server open just in case a couple people want to play something that wasn't anticipated. If you've been to a lan party recently, what games were most people interested in playing? I have a few ideas in this dept too but I'd like to get some feedback since I havent been to a lan party in over a year.

Alcohol - yay or nay? I'm planning on making this an 18+ event (unless parental consent is given by phone). Should I go one step further and say BYOB, with bracelets for everyone 21+, or should I keep it alcohol free?

What are some good ideas for prizes? I was thinking a starter water cooling kit, or a hard drive.. something most people either don't have or can always use..

Any other tips or experiences that would be helpful are greatly appreciated.

Gamewise: (what we play at our lans)

Battlefield 1942
Warcraft 3
Jedi Knight 2
RavenSheild
UT2K3

Alcoholwise: Nope. We're hardcore, and go for about 2-3 days nonstop (save our traditional trip to Jumbo Buffet [love chinese food] or next to no sleep). So any alcohol would just make us more tired. Its caffiend Mountain Dew all the way.

Serverwise: Can't really help you there. I usually bring my extra box and someone games on it so I run the server for whatever game we play on my 3Ghz monster to minimize on the lag. But if running dedicated I'm thinking a 1Ghz box with at least 512 DDR ram should do it.

Prizes? Bah, never had prizes at our lans. But if you were, perhaps some ratpadz or similar.

Most dedicated game servers do not have to be high powered machines at all. In many games there isn't even a GUI running, just command line which doesn't take all that much as far as resources go.

(EDIT - They should have a good bit of memory though.)

On the alcohol, if it's 18+, I wouldn't even suggest it because it would then be your responsibility to ensure there is no underage drinking going on. Should a minor happen to get drunk and have an accident, it's your ass that's going to be in trouble.

21+, go for it. We usually BYOB, but occassionally have a keg.

Some game suggestions:

Half-Life / Counterstrike (why it's still popular I have no idea)
UT2k3
Battlefield 1942
Warcraft 3
C&C Generals
