Hey all,

Some friends and I would like to throw a lan party over break, celebrating the end of exams. Unfortunately we've got a ton of laptops without a lot of 3d power.

Any game suggestions? Don't worry, we've already got Starcraft on the list.

Thanks.

Some text-based adventuring?

Dude, if you've got no 3D power, skip the LAN and just play StarCraft at home over dialup.

Dude, we have some 3d power, just looking for suggestions that I had not thought of. We also cannot play starcraft over battle.net with each other, because many of us are on the same router. Battle.net no likey, will kick us off.

 StarCraft, the ultimate multiplayer game, hardly need any horsepower at all to play.

you dont need battlenet to play multiplayer StarCraft, just choose LAN, and host a game, the others choose LAN, and will see your game.

What he said.

If you want better suggestions, you could post up what kinds of vid cards your laptops are packing.

The original Unreal Tournament runs fine in software mode or limited 3D graphics, plus its a blast. I've played BF:1942 with some minimal hardware, too. Warcraft, Starcraft are all good, too. THe original Half-Life and Team Fortress should work, too.

Yes starcraft is the ultimate. But we will need to switch it up.

I downloaded Duke3d--but, that game just isnt the way I remember it. We've got Warcraft 2 (which isn't much different unfortunately). I'm also downloading GTA2 right now, I think that had LAN multiplayer capabilities...maybe.

I understand that we can play starcraft over LAN. The problem is, we cannot play it over Battle.net if you are on the same router with someone else in your game. Can you do this with TCP/IP over the net? If so, please let me know how.

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep em coming if you can.

Quake---good call. I'll get quake 3, laptops now could probably handle that. I am also getting No One Lives Forever 2--that wasn't too serious of a graphics game, was it?

Dead on War--Do you mean "dawn of war" ?

Grand Theft Auto 2!!! OMG I  that game over multiplayer LANs. :D Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is really fun as well. I remember playing that on my AMD K6-300MHz, so I'm sure your laptops can run it!

Oh yeah, I never really suggested any games, did I? :)

Quake 3 (with/without Urban Terror mod), Half-Life (with/without CS mod) will run on just about anything with a 3D card. BF1942 with Desert Combat mod will work on older cards with some graphical tweaking down, but its not a lot of fun until you've got 8+ people. Unreal Tournament will probably run fine, I recommend the Infiltration mod.

StarCraft: Brood War and WarCraft 3, as mentioned before.

Edit: Although, I don't really recommend playing anything non-FPS at a LAN, b/c it a) doesn't take advantage of the faster connection which is the whole point of a LAN, and b) doesn't provide as much opportunity to yell at your friends during heated firefights, which is the other point of a LAN.

Another vote for starcraft. Used to run that on my 486, then later a P233MMX in the dorms at school. Those were the days. Age of Empires 2 is another classic, similar game in a different setting. Diablo 2 is a good one too, albeit a different animal.
