I'm hosting a lan tomorrow, and I had a nice number of 8 until a few people wanted to bring some friends. Which is awesome, more the merrier, but more than 8 makes game selection a bit of an issue.

Off the top of my head I can think of:
CS:S
Cod4
ut2004
TF2

All locally hosted 5v5/6v6 we will have between 10-12 people attending. I was thinking Jedi Knight academy but last time I tried it was broken on the new ati cards.

Our slowest machine is a dual core socket 939, 2gb of ram, and a 7800 gt. All other machines are beasts.

So any other suggestions?

LoL

not really lan, but 10-player and free

Thanks. We might do Dota instead since I think more people are familiar with it vs LoL in my group of friends. But thanks for jogging my memory.

Also World in Conflict has been added to the list.

That was one nice thing about BF1942, you could add bots into LAN games. Same with UT2004, although 10-12 is enough for most UT2004 maps.

pretty much any fps should be good 8 people. getting into other genres is the problem, unless its an mmo.

We ended up mostly playing css and cod4. Most fun was had by all in cod4.

11 people is almost too many people honestly. With more than 8 you can't play most rts games and are largely limited to shooters, but not quite enough for really big shooters like bf2. Then add in the usual random networking issues that happen or someones computer crashing, or not everyone having the games installed and updated. It was definitely not the best lan I have hosted. My 8 man I hosted last summer was a lot more memorable and fun. I think most people had a good time, so success on that front.

Plan the games ahead of time, so everyone can have it updated. Same thing if you want to play mods.

Another one I use to play on a LAN was Farcry. I think Crysis also has LAN play.

Star Wars Battlefront games also had bots, if you want big battles with only a few players. Battlefront 2 also had spaceship battles.

For something a little bit different, there was also Battlestations Midway and Pacific. That might have only been 8 players. Not sure.

I keep seeing Urban Terror recommended. What makes it better than something like CSS?

I like the movement better than CSS. You can jump off walls and accelerate to using the old Q3 acceleration rounding error. This allows you to string great jumps through several maps which makes CTF great in UrT great.

Look up some of the UrT jump videos for some extreme examples.

I forgot about this thread. heh

Movement is an important aspect of the game IMO. You can get by without it, but you won't be a lean, mean, killing machine. ;)

Here's my favourite jump map video. It's insane  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwN87Gv6Ycg&feature=related

I like playing on the low grav servers though. The games are a lot quicker than normal grav. :)

How did this lan work out? Any glitches and what not you'd like to bring up? Any good points?

networking issues were the main problem. We had a guy bring a 32 port rack mount gigabit switch. Sadly it wasn't configured properly so DHCP wasn't working properly and shared folders were not being discovered and we lacked the necessary serial cable to reconfigure it then.

Games. I did my best to distribute the games ahead of time but there are always some people you miss. Combine that with networking issues (we had to daisy change switches, some of which were 100mbit) It meant copying gigs of data over "slow" connections.

More than 8 kind of ruins a lot of games. You rule out pretty much every RTS people are familiar with. Also most RTS games have a steeper learning curve, so if not everyone is familiar with it the game doesn't work very well. You are pretty much limited to FPSs, which gets old after a while. We mostly ended up playing COD4 and CS:S.

With 8 players you can play 4v4 L4D and do epic starcraft/age and honestly those are enough to keep everyone happy through the lan. Some of the best lan experiences I have ever had are in SC1 and L4D.

Wait for the id package to go on a steam sale during the christmas - new years sale. Between Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3,,,,, that should be enough to keep you and your friends busy for a long time.

Serious sam 3 has been pushed back to November, that is one game I am looking forward to.
