LAN game suggestion for me to play with the kids

I've got 2 boys ages 8 & 7 and wanted to get them into LAN gaming. Any suggestions or are they a tad too young?

If it helps I run a amd x2 3600, 2gb ram, 7900gs

One of theirs is a 3100 sempron 1gb ram 128mb 9200se video
The next is a 2500xp, 1gb ram, geforce2 mx400

I'm guessing I need to snag a few 5200-5500, 6200, or something else suited for gaming. I can run a dedicated server on my 2003 server.

Any suggestions? I'm guessing FPS would be the easiest but considered possibly an old school shooter due to limited hardware and maybe not so graphic content.

Thanks for any feedback. I figure they are never too young to learn.

The original Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 Arena would run perfectly on those setups. They show their age, but they will be fast and are still pretty fun. If they want to try learning a RTS game you could try Warcraft (even up to warcraft 3). Those are my suggestions...you can even find demos for Quake 3 and probably Unreal Tournament around to see if that's their thing.

You know, I wish that I had people around here that were into PC games so I could use my LAN for something similar.

It depends on their maturity level and if they can handle FPS games. I started playing FPS games at age 5 when Wolfenstein 3D came out. I have always been very mature for my age, so violent video games never bothered me a bit.

Anyway, I would recommend RTS games like any of the Command & Conquer or Age of Empire/Mythology games. They are more age appropriate for the common kid and teach more organizational and multitasking skills than FPS does. FPS games are good for developing reflexes, but they dont develop various aspects of intelligence as well.

war 3 or starcraft really fun lan and you can play on the same team. Can teach them team work and how to split tasks. They will see first hand how 3 is stronger than 1 when working together

but they prob to young to sit that long and learn the game...but a point and shoot is to early for kids that age

maybe try some sims games. Like sim city type stuff

The Worms series is great for quick, fun LAN games and would be suitable for children.

The Mechwarrior4-series games are not graphically violent, since you're battling with big robotic walking tanks that simply go *POW* when they've had enough. There's plenty of tactics/strategy options, both in building custom 'mechs and in gameplay. If you start laserboating and relying too much on heat-generating weapons, I tack on a couple Clan Flamers and supress your ability to use them. Next round, I discover you're packing LBX20 autocannons instead :shocked: Gahh, where'd my 'mech's arm go, it was there right before that extremely-loud explosion... :confused:

MW4 runs fine on stuff like a 1GHz Duron with a Radeon 7500, so no problem in that regard. And it should be dirt-cheap by now. MW4 Mercenaries or MW4 Vengeance.

Don't play counter strike :(

- Freelancer (online is totally awesome feels like a MMO space sim and game never needed a cd key)
- UT2000 (good old UT , still the best me think)
- Age of mythology (good mutliplayer RTS)
- BF1942 ( has decent AI)
- Never winter night 1 (awesome RPG with awesome multplayer )
- Dawn of War (good mutliplayer RTS)
- Diablo 2 (awesome RPG with awesome multplayer )
- Freedom force (Super hero game that didn't suck )
- Serious Sam ( good multplayer but gets boring after a while )

I still play Freelancer online and i love it : )

So far this is the only one that I'd say is kosher for seven and eight year old children to be playing. And I imagine they'd have a hoot playing it as well ... kids of all ages love gigantic walking tanks. :D

/note to self - go find MW4 discs when I get home

They should all be ok for you to play responsibly for your kids. Don't get them into UT99 or Counter-Strike or the next thing you know they will be seeing gay spray porn online if they outsmart you and stumble into the interweb while your not around.
