LAN filesharing software

Here at university we have a very big LAN with everybodies computers plugged into it. Many people have got files shared using windows filesharing, or using an ftp program, but this makes it very hard to find the files you want (programs like sharescan take forever to scan the network since it is so big, and do not search the ftp servers). The university does not allow us to connect to external filesharing networks, so I was wondering if there is a program that all of us could run in a way very similar to kazaa or napster, but that does not need to connect to any external server.

It would be acceptable if one person needed to run some kind of server software that everybody else connected to.

Someone set it up at our University, and while there are some battles with the network admins over it, it has been running for a few years now. Something to look into.

I found a program to do it by asking around, you have probably heard of it beofre, but just in case somebody searches the forum and finds this, a program to do what I want can be found at http://www.gnucleus.com/
