Alright I have a 3com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 10/100base-tx Ethernet card and windows recognizes it and installs some generic driver cuz I don't have the real one and I can't find it or get it to work when I do dload it. So anyways it works and everything its just that if I play a game say like Soldier of fortune 2 I always get disconnected like 10 minutes into the game and if I just leave it without doing anything like 20 min later it stops responding until I restart my comp.Any help would be appreciated.

Are you connected to a dynamic IP address? Or DHCP server? Is your IP address different each time you restart your computer? What OS are you running?

I'm in college behind a firewall, thats all I really know about it, running windows xp, but the thing is before I reformatted everything worked fine. I didn't have this problem at all before that and its ticking me off.

Side note: I have also noticed strange lag when I am doing anything on my comp, For instance watching a dvd will glitch and lag every cple of minutes or so. Trying to drag a window across the screen for instance will cause it to glitch and jump.

I'm confused by what happened here... it seems to me that somewhere in here you reformatted and reloaded the OS? If so did you upgrade to XP at that time or were you XP when it all worked before. One thing to check on with the ethernet card is to go into the properties of the card itself check the power management tab and see if it has the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option checked. If so try unchecking that and see if the disconnect continues.

Yea I just reformatted like 3 days ago, because I had a problem with my mup.sys hanging on me, fixed that. Then I reinstall everything and then my computer doesn't recognize my network card, I dloaded the proper drivers and everything yet windows said they weren't the drivers for them. Then I changed the pci slot my ethernet card was on and windows recognizes it and installs the generic drivers for me. This is to the point where I am at now, I have tried to update windows recently but the website says I have all the available updates even though I dont.

Well for the updates issue you can try 2 things. One go to Tools==> Internet Options ==> Languages tab down by the bottom and be sure you have a language selected.
The other thing you can try is deleting the folder where it stores the updates locally I don't recall the folder offhand but check those language settings first.

Check this posting about windows updates problems. My issue ended up being that my systems date was off. The windows update site described this problem.
