LAN backbone?

crisscross

Golden Member
Hey guys,
Can you tell me what is the optimal backbone for around 25 users? maybe around 50 users in another 6 months time. basically for office applications no developing though.
Thanx a bit urgent and any help greatly appreciated.

Some additional information would be helpfull:

Are all the users on the same floor?

How many servers / what kind of servers?

Are the users going to be alloed to talk to network to each other (MS Peer to peer)?

Are you going to attach to any WANS?

What flavor/speed of Internet connection will you have (if any)?

What kind of end-user computers (speed, OS, NIC) and are they fairly new or fairly old (generally, don't need an exact list)?

What have you got now, and how is it working for you (generally functional, but slow...easily swamped, works well but you want to upgrade...etc)?

Do you have backup system on the servers (Like Tape)..how often do you backup...and how much data do you usually backup in a session?

Are you using any kind of Desktop Management system (like Intel LanDesk)? Do you have or want any kind of network management system?

What's the skill level of the person or persons that are going to be installing and maintaining the LAN/Network?

Thre are some fairly stock answers (like "Buy a huge friggin' switch and patch 'em all in&quot😉...but to tailor the system more specifically to your intentions is gonna cost you some Q&A.

FWIW

CAT5E cable with a 48 port Cisco Catalyst switch running full duplex 100MBPS. for internet needs I would say a Frac T1 to full T1, alhough if you can get SDSL go with that.

any questions?
