Lamer's question about PCIe

So, can I use a short PCIe card in the long PCIe slots? I realize that it's probably a lame question but I never tried it before. E.g., can I use a short PCIe tv tuner card in a long PCIe slot that is used by video cards?

PCI-e 1x/4x cards will work in PCI-e 8x/16x slots.

Maybe, some mobo's will only support graphics cards in the x16 slots. All the x4 slots should work fine with a x1 card though.
