A judge is sentencing this poacher to a year in jail -- and making him watch Bambi once a month

A Missouri judge is turning to Walt Disney to make sure David Berry Jr. never illegally hunts again. Berry's sentencing is the latest event in one of the state's largest poaching cases.

Lawrence County Judge Robert George sentenced Berry to a year in jail for illegally killing deer, taking only their heads and antlers and leaving the rest of their bodies to rot. And while he's in jail, he's required to watch the Walt Disney movie "Bambi" once a month. In the 1942 animated classic, Bambi's mother is shot and killed by hunters.

"Berry Jr.'s convictions are the tip of a long list of illegal fish and game activity by him and other members of his family," Lawrence County Conservation Agent Andy Barnes said. Wildlife officers interviewed suspects from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Canada, tying 14 Missouri residents to more than 230 charges across 11 counties.

Berry was arrested on August 31, 2016, alongside David Berry Sr. and Kyle Berry after an almost nine-month investigation, and other Missouri residents were ordered to appear in court on related charges, most having to do with illegally taking deer. Charges from this group alone total more than 300 in state, federal and international jurisdictions.

Hmm, I just realized that I have never watched Bambi. I've watched Bambi Meets Godzilla more than once. Anyway, I think that headless taxidermy aught to be a thing.

Wait? he is killing deer and only taking the heads and antlers, leaving the meat to rot? He well deserves the year in jail, but I would make him watch videos of the starving children of Africa or somewhere.

Well it's funny to make him watch Bambi, but I think if there was a chance this sentence would help him recognize his actions were wrong, I don't think there watching of Bambi would be necessary. Most likely behavioral change would be effected through fear of future punishment for which the thing that matters is how well he is surveiled once he is released and not how he is punished. If the punishment is not just and he is treated vindictively and is able to hunt in the future without being caught, his behavior and beliefs will be reinforced.

And then there's peer pressure..

You know he's going to catch shit from other inmates when the guards pull him every month for "movie time"

And how much do you think his buddies are going to laugh at him when he gets out?

And that's going to help him reform how? Peer pressure though can be a form of surveillance. But I doubt peers are going to be on him constantly about hunting when he's a free man.

I don't care about making him watch Bambi, but it's good to see a poacher go to jail. I hope they confiscated ever weapon he owns. If he get's out and does it again I hope he gets 10 years for it.

Making him watch Bambi, is part of that new "creative sentencing" thing they've got going in Ohio.
