I've heard people talk about Lamb of God for a few years but for whatever reason I kinda avoided their albums. To be honest I thought they were just another band screaming satanic references over repetitive riffs. This weekend I read a few reviews online gushing praise over their Ashes of the Wake album, so I decided to take the plunge and buy the CD. I'm actually shocked I don't have brain damage yet, I've been banging my head to this album for the past 2 days.

The music is excellent, the vocals are top notched and if you're like me and like your metal heavy as f*ckin possible then this is the album to check for. They make Metallica look like girl scouts.

Meh, it's ok, kind of boring.

Check out Unearth - The Oncoming Storm if you want to hear what Lamb of God tries to be.

If you want a sample, PM me :)

I find it hard to believe that it gets any better than LoG but I'm willing to check out your proof.

I concur. LoG is okay, but they sound pretty generic to me. Unearth is pretty good, as is Zao. Undying and Shai'Hulud are also some good underground metal bands in the same vein.

Lamb of God is excellent. I can play Laid to Rest pretty well. But I'd say Unearth Trumps them. But, Shadows Fall beats them all. :D

LoG def. doesnt sound generic to me, they have a distinct sound. They freaking kick ass, seen em live a few times after which I really got into their music. Havent heard much of Unearth to compare to them tho.

Lots of good band suggestions here

This is probably a wierd question but do any of the following bands NOT have satanic references in their music? I try to avoid the death metal/demonic type lyrics

Mastadon
Unearth
Shadows Falls
Laid to Rest
Meshuggah

Personally, I dig the more 'operatic' metal. Bands with a female lead just pwn all, IMHO.

(Plus, you can pretty much guarantee the lack of 'demonic' lyrics in those bands)

any suggestions on those and how heavy are they?

I like metal that makes me bang my head against concrete pillars, the harder the better

Penumbra
Theater of Tragedy (some)
Lacuna Coil (some)
Sirenia
Epica (some)
After Forever
Tristania (some)

FWIW, the best album of all time (IMHO, at the moment, anyway) is Nightwish's "Once" - hardly 'bang your head against the wall', though, but pretty durn good. ('Wish I Had an Angel' off the CD is on Launch as a video - fairly between their softer and harder songs. Also on Launch is 'Swamped' and 'Heaven's a Lie' from Lacuna Coil)

I actually have a Lacuna Coil album around here somewhere, I did'nt like it first but it really grew on me. Not one of my favorites but definitely a good record.
