i hate it when people accuse the refs of costing a team a game. the calls tend to balance out over the course of the game, so its never really their fault (though that buzzer beater by baron davis could have been disastrous)

goddamn refs...home court advantage my ass...calling 4 on Shaq in 1st half, 3 on Bryant

as bombrman said, they'll just get to end it in 5 in front of their home crowd

<< i can tell not too many basket ball fans by reading this thread. there were several bad calls by the refs which had huge impact on the game. there were three horrible calls in the 2nd quarter which fueled the spurs huge lead. there was a non charging call against duncan on fox, a blocking call on horry which was clearly a charge on parker and a charging call on bryant which was total b.s. - that should have been a 3 pt play. that fould on bryant sent him to the bench for like 10 minutes or whatever. the huge lead was fake. however with shaq sidelined with 4 pseudo fouls he couldnt do anythning in the third for fear of getting his 5th foul. he wasnt lathargic, he wasnt "off" he just couldnt risk getting a 5th foul. if shaq didnt have 4 fouls in the third the lakers would have sustained their surge and tied the game heading into the 4th. but with shaq and kobe playing conservative so they wouldnt get a 5th foul SA had a much easier time. but since the lakers survived the 3rd quarter w/out shaq and kobe getting a 5th fould they could play more aggressive, which they did and not surprisingly they were able to almost, overcome the lead the spurs had built up.

it was not bad calls by the refs alone that lead to the SA vicotry though. SA hit their shots, and in the 4th quarter they had 4 or 5 crucial offensive rebounds to halt laker surges. those offensive rebounds were huge. as for kobe, well i feel for him. im sure he would drive the lane but twice during the game he had driven the lane and got fouled hard and both time the refs didnt call anything. he didnt think he could drive the lane and instead of taking an off balance shot he chose to pass but it wasnt there. obviously they should have called a time out as soon as shaq got the ball.

conclusion: horrible game by the refs and great game by rose to grab those offensive rebounds late. and SA fans, well dont let this get to your heads otherwise youll just be setting yourself up for a let down.

You make some good points but Shaq was off tonight. Maybe it was his injury. I mean he blew three dunks he normally makes (yes I know he was fouled). DFish missed a wide open layup. Kobe took a few ill-advised shots in the first half. Hunter and Samaki didn't give us much. And George gave us nothing. I'm not going to complain about fouls. Yes there were some bad calls but there were some against SA as well. Samaki and Horry's failure to box out and board was quite evident especially defensive rebounds.

give some credit to the spurs too. they didn't play 'just average' and let the Lakers beat themselves. they put up a great fight in a good game.

bunch of whinning laker nut huggers. You can make the same argument on the first game against the Lakers. On a series of play that really turned the game, Duncan got mugged all three times he went up and no foul. On the next play, Oneal plows through a defender who had his hand up in the air, I didn't even see any contact and the refs calls a foul.

If you ask any non Lakers/ non SA fan here, most will probably say that the Refs are extremely generous to the Lakers. You can't breath on Shaq and Kobe without getting called for a foul. Shaq lowers that shoulder when he goes for a shot 90% of the time, and guess what? That's call an offensive fould but it's usually the person guarding him who gets whistl.

Recall the Pheonix vs Lakers series a while back? Pheonix was on the recieving end of some of the worst call I've ever seen including a very obvious foul from Shaq on Penny. The suns would have won that game and probably would have given them the momentum to win the series.

Don't be blaming the refs on the Lakers lost. The Lakers get more benefits from the refs than any other team in the NBA. You should put a huge * * around the Lakers first two championships because they got there with a lot of help from the refs.

I'm no nut hugger. I realize the Lakers get there share of calls so I'm not complaining. /me recalls the last regular season game against the Spurs and the no-call on Shaq fouling Tim Pumpkin. That might of cost the Spurs home court in this series. But honestly the Lakers will win this series refs or no refs.

NICE win for the Lakers. Close game the entire time, but Kobe came up huge in the final 5 minutes to seal the win. Very hard fought game. Lakers are road warriors. very proud of Shaq today too. Guy is hurting BAD, but he came up with a solid 22 points and 15 boards.

this was certainly not true tonite. i'm not a lakers fan, but i can say the spurs got more than their fair share of foul calls. just the huge difference in free throws. anyway, don't matter kobe still won it in the 4th.

as far as the lakers usually getting the benefit of refs calls, well thats just b.s.

as for the refs in game 3, well i thought it was pretty typical. some bad calls both ways, some non calls both ways nothing out of the ordinary. but whats important is that the refs didnt have an impact on the outcome - the players decided the game. Game 2 is completely different though. the refs completely crippled the lakers in game 2. im not saying it was intentional but thats a fact. the bad calls had much much more to do with the lakers losing than the play of the spurs in game 2.

If Shaq weighed 200 lbs, he'd go flying every play due to the abuse he gets down low...Watch carefully and you'll see that the 2 or 3 that are defending him will grab, poke, and prod every possession...

How is it that Kobe who is averaging 25 shots per game is only taking 2 free throws per game?? The refs really are calling it against the lakers in this series. i've never seen such bad officiating.

on the other hand, the NJ NETS won AGAIN. WOOO HOOOO.

Hey I wonder if the spurs could shoot a few more free throws in this game? They've shot 29 to the Lakers 16, and that is after a few obvious fouls called for the Lakers in the 4th so far.

The amount of foul calls is still pretty close... 23-20 it's just a matter of shooting fouls.

Close? Are you watching this game? Tim Duncan has shot almost as many foul shots as the Lakers. It's 31-20 on foul shots right now.

WOW! Spurs suck down the stretch!
There are going to be some serious questions being asked in San Antonio.
WTF kind of last play was that?
WTF kind of last 10 mintues was that?
