Malone will sign a one year contract in order to get his ring. Once LA wins, Karl goes back to Utah or some other team and gets the record. He only needs 2-3 solid seasons and the scoring record will be his.

He may never break the record if he does this. He'll get 15 pts a game tops. 4 future hall of famers, all still starting, is pretty impressive tho.

They won't win tho, their bench still sucks and malone is too slow to get up and down and can't defend well anymore.

1. He only needs 12.3 ppg for 2 seasons to break the record.
2. Are you crazy? A team with Shaq, Kobe, Payton, and Malone won't win the championship?

shaq and kobe will amount for 2/3rds of the teams points (about 60 combined). that leaves 30+ points for the rest of the team to pick up on. malone only needs 12+ pts a game which leaves a good share for payton (who averages 18 pts) and the rest of the bench (which don't score much anyways) to pick up on. defensively shaq and malone will have a hard time running full court but i don't forsee that being a big issue because 1) unless the other team plans to somehow run a fast break all day, malone and shaq should not have a problem getting up court before the ball gets there and 2) shaq, kobe, malone, and payton are arguably some of the best defenders today in the nba. you can say malone and payton are old but they can still bang with the best of em. tighter D = less chance for a turnover = less chance for a fast break. and 3) lakers play a half court game. doesn't require fast players on the offensive end.

agreed, he'll probably still get it. Shaq and kobe's points would come down too.

Karl Malone is a fine, fine player. He is a player that will be in the Hall of Fame, with a Jazz jersey. With that in mind, I'm pretty sure he'll don a different jersey for the upcoming season. Will it be a Laker purple/gold? There is a really good chance he would do that, since the Lakers are definitely in contention of winning a ring and he knows there is a great supporting staff of players eager to get an awesome Shaq backup.

Payton? I'm iffy on him. The Lakers could certainly use a vet like this for more than 2-3 years and he would be a welcome addition. But would he become the same as the previous "Laker 3rd scorer"? Horace Grant was the only third man that was consistant, the rest have had much larger salaries than what they played for.

Malone still gets up and down the court almost as well as ten years ago. His body fat should still be around 3.5% or something close thereto. While Malone never was a 'great' defender, his defensive strength has normally been oriented more towards position containment and the low-ball than shot blocking anyway (witness Mark Eaton and Ostertag as primary shotblockers through the years).

Heard earlier in the week that the Jazz were after Andre Miller to take Stockton's place as well as a couple of other free agents.

Could be interesting if he leaves though. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the same story a more indepth. Truly the end of an era and I hate to see him leave. Incidentally, his daughter, Cheryl Ford , should play in the WNBA next year. I think that might be a first; both father and daughter playing pro ball at the same time.

Now that would be interesting. Lets say they do in fact get both Payton and Malone, they will be the automatic favorites to win the championship. Thats a ton of pressure with 4 All-stars and 4 potential HOFers.

whoa .. that would be an awesome team.

i usually don't like the Lakers cause they are that damn good. But i'm a fan of Kobe and Payton.

I never ever liked Malone. But it would be fun watching those 4 play togehter for about 2 games or so.

altho i hate the lakers and malone, it'd be sick if this happened and the spurs somehow got kidd/oneal... that would be the craziest WCF ever (not to mention there are the kings and mavs out west)!

Lakers need PF who will rebound, play defense, and occasionally score. Need another Horace Grant type player. I absolutely can't stand Malone. He wants the scoring record. But will be interesting to see what happens.

I agree PJ Brown is who they should go after not Malone.
