Laggy Web Surfing / On-line Gaming

memo

A bit long thanks for reading 😀

About 3-4 weeks ago I started noticing some lag issues with surfing the web. Websites would all of a sudden take 20 seconds to load instead of 2-3. Usually webpages load instantly but the problem would be it would load partially like the header or 10% of the page, hang and not load anything for 10-15 seconds then load everything else fine. And web surfing would be fine after that. This would happen every now and again but I always chalked it up to random congestion.

I then started to notice it more in On-line Gaming as well. I'd be happily running along but then have a huge lag spike and not do anything for 10-15 seconds, and then when my "connection" came back I'd be dead. 😛

I have a Linksys WRT54GS with HyperWRT + thibor 13d installed. And have a Linksys wireless card. The combo has been fine for the past year or so. I tried plugging straight into the router, didn't have any problems, but the problem is so inconsistent I'm not sure plugging it straight in will make a difference. I can go days without any hiccups or have 4-5 hiccups in one house. I tried plugging straight into the DSL modem as well but with similiar results to plugging straight into the router. Is there anything I can do to diagnose the problem at the instant the lag occurs? Is there anything I can do to pinpoint the problem as the wirless card/router/modem/physical phone line?

1. first check the easiest problems to check. pings, tracert, etc
2. check the acutal wireless/wired connections for any similarities/differences.

if you are only getting bad performance wirelessly it might be neighboring interference and you might need to change the channel. If someone nearby isusing one of the old channel bonding access points you are screwed😛 Run net stumbler (or whatever the kids are using these days😛) to see what the situation is😀

3. if it is determined to exist on both interfaces assume a problem with your rotuer: usual backup your config, and reflash it with the latest flash version and defautl settings. see if you get the same issues.

4. if it is still an issue, call your ISP and give them hell😎
