Lagging sound

Friend of mine's computer has lagging sound when he plays games, say FPS game, you shoot, see gun fire, but 1/2 second later it produces the sound, also sounds like it's skipping a bit, like a CD skips.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers with no luck, have some other ideas but want to see what someone can produce here.

SPECS:

Win98Se
AMD Duron 850 MHz
128 MB RAM
MSI K7T Pro2A Motherboard
GeForce Mx 32 MB RAM
Western Digital 20G Hard Drive
56x Magic CD-ROM
New 3.5 inch floppy drive

Has integreated sound.

<< as a last resort you might consider an add-on sound card... >>

He's not going to put any extra money into it. Really last resort would be format....

He could get an Artis based 4 channel PCi soundcard for less than $10.....if he's not willing to spend then he might have to just put up with it.

I have found On-Board to generally be not very good in more modern games, plus it hoggs a portion of the cpu usage.

I agree that getting an add in sound card would be better, even told him so, he didn't care then, and more than likely won't spend the money for it now.
