Lagged Computer

I have an Abit BX6 rev. 2 with a Celeron 566@850, 128MB of crucial PC100 RAM, and a Maxtor Diamondplus40 30 gig HD and running WindowsME. My question is that I'm having to defrag my HD an unusual amount of time. For some reason (about once a week) my computer just starts to have major problems. I'm talking about my FPS in CS is fine, then all of the sudden it drops down to about 5 FPS for about a sec and then jumps back up. It keeps doing this, which essentially makes the game unplayable. I'm able to fix this by defragging my HD. I have no clue why this works, so I'm wondering why does this work? and how can I fix this problem? I know that this is probably one of those reinstall windows things, but what other options are there.

Empty the Temp Folder. Restart your computer in DOS mode. Next, type: "temp". Then type: "del *.tmp". Do not put the quotation marks. This will delete all files in the windows temp file that are supposed to be deleted each time windows is shutdown. Sometimes they do not get deleted, but this fixes the problem. Then defrag your HD. It worked for my computer that had the same problem. Hope it works for yours.

thx for the help, since that makes complete sense, since this usually happens after a bad shut down, which would explain the temp files not getting deleted.
