Lag Spikes when gaming

I've been getting lag spikes about every 2 minutes while playing games such as half life 2, UT2004....it's almost set. I have a linksys wired router and a newly built computer. comp is an athlon 64 3200+, radeon x800xl, dfi lanparty ultra-d mobo, twin mos 1gb. im just wondering if anyone has some info on why this is happening and how i might fix it...I don't think it is the ISP because when my other comp (an older one) was hooked directly into the dsl modem it rarely got lag spikes in games, so im guessing it has something to do with the router. i havent installed the dsl modem drivers onto my new comp could that be it?? i decided not to because i figured since i could get on the internet and I download fairly quick why bother? but i don't really know. it's just rather annoying get a spike when you are just about to own someone :-D. any help is appreciated. thanks

Ha..I know this isn't a seriously problem or anything...but just feel free to give an idea or 2. :-D. thanks
