Basically im in the corporate office me and another guy work the IT dept for about 300 people, everyday i show up 3-4 minutes past 8 but i stay later to make up for the few minutes im late. And the other day i was 25 minutes late b/c my dogs got out and were in teh woods and i had to find them before work, so i called my boss and let him know. Then the other IT guy had TUesday off and she asked my boss if was he was excused for that day. My boss said dont wory about it it was stupid for her to say anything, but what the hell i get my work done you worry about the call center, if im not doing my job then bitch. Also the call center people taek 2 15 minutes breaks to smoke, i dont take a break all day which i dont mind, btw i clock in so its not like they are losing money.

"Technically he should be getting a written warning if we follow the same procedure as the call center. Were any of these excused by you?"

hah, good luck getting sympathy for that here. i tried it before. people will contend that there are absolutely no circumstances which justify being late.

that said, ever since my last warning, i've been on time. so i guess their little lame ass warning worked.

AT my job, they do not care as long as I work a 40 hour week. That said, I have never seen an employer bust your balls for being 5 minutes lates.

Everywhere I've worked had a 5 minute grace period, but if you're consistently late you need to adjust your schedule.

Occasionally being late is unavoidable but consistently late is unacceptable IMO (even if it's <5 mins).

I come in late and leave work early all the time. But then again, I get my stuff done and I'm salaried so it makes no difference :)

Being consistently late in a job that requires you to be there at a certain time is unacceptable. You can't avoid being late every once in awhile, but punctuality in my book is extremely important. It shows that you a reliable.

Wow, unless you're being paid really well, that's pretty lame.

Those are the rules she more than likely has to apply to. Or is she in Ops and watching the punch ins and outs?

If it's her job to make sure you are there on time, then she's just doing what she's supposed to.

She's in a call center. Call centers have next to zero excuses or exceptions for people being late. They expect you to be there when shift starts and you leave when your shift ends assuming you aren't on a phone call at the time.

It's a high turnover place where they can, and will fire people without much remorse for consistently being late, even if they do stay a couple minutes late.

I've never worked for a company that monitors it's employees so strictly. All of the places I've worked haven't cared one bit when I come in as long as I get my work done. I usually roll in around 8:30 and leave around 6:00 or 6:30. Most people here come in anywhere from 7 to 10 and stay anywhere from 4 to 10. It's all about how busy your workload is and how tight the deadline is. I usually take an hour for lunch but yesterday I took an hour and a half because I took a 30 minute nap and no one cared.

Developers Rule!

I guess I am luck and work for a great laid back company. Most of us come in 10-30mins late but we make it up at the end of the day!

Hehehe, nobody cares when I arrive. 10, 20, 30 minutes late? Not a problem. I work over 8 hours every day. If I come in late I stay late. Simple as that.

I am the one person in our department that is on time every day for work. I can't stand being late. Actually, I prefer getting in early when it is quiet to get caught up on things. However, at 4:30 I'm out the door, every single day, barring emergencies. I get flak for this like you wouldn't believe. Even had to sit down with an HR person a few months back because there was the idea I was skipping out early

Talked to my boss about it, and he doesn't care, and I told him about the early times. He didn't really believe it, so I send him the occasional email now and again right when I get in asking a question so he can see the times. Being late is laziness IMO. Sure, things happen from time to time, but on my commute, barring a major snowstorm, or hitting a deer or moose, there is nothing to slow us down. The next time someone questions me popping out the door at 4:30 ... well, suffice it to say I put in more hours than they do, and I won't take an flak :p

Yup. I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy working at a place where they were so anal about time. I get my work done and do a better job than most. What's the big deal if I work 8:00 to 5:00 or 8:30 to 5:30?
