Coworker "My son wants to go to a summer camp this year for a few weeks"
Me "Why"
Her "He said he enoys the outdoors and fresh air, he really enjoyed the week long school camping trip this year"
Me "Are you sure that is the reason, or maybe he enjoys getting away from you"
Her (Hurtful look)
Me "Oh I am only joking, I am sorry don't be offended"
Her (Half ass akward smile)

So was my comment really over the line about her son wanting to get away from her.

No it shouldnt have been offensive, unless you used a very serious tone.

Tell her to get over herself.

The only reason it might have been offensvie to her is if she actually thinks it might be the truth.

Truth hurts.

You have planted the evil seed of doubt in her mind. From this point on that poor woman will doubt her precious son's love for her. She will think about it constantly; every time he asks to go out with his friends she will think to herself "is he just trying to get away from me? Am I a bad mother?". You have destroyed her life. Good Job!

You should have a "line" at making jokes at the expense of others. You were clearly over that line.

Damn, if I was her, I'd be happy to get rid of the kid for the few weeks!

I thought parent's liked "ALONE" time? (kids at school, etc)

EDIT: Isn't that what SUMMER camp is about? The kid learns and the parents get a BREAK?

Are you a nut?
Let's treat her like a Preschooler! Most mothers act like it. Why not coddle them more so they can do more damage to the innocent kids!

I don't see any over the line crossing there. I say things like that ALL the time.

I don't think it's really offensive, but I don't see the humor that made you say that to begin with.

Without knowing any more details, it seems that is was worded in a mean way.

So why don't you say what you truely meant to say instead of the bullshit you bantered?

Sounds slightly offensive, not from the suggestion that the kid wants to get away from her but from the standpoint that the coworker could be suggestion she's someone that reasonable people would want to get away from. Gray area - a normal person would just shrug it off and deal with it.

Several years ago, I went to talk to a guy in tech support - something I did fairly regularly being a developer. He was a sharp guy and I always respected him. I'd had heard that he had 'those' views on religion and abortion but had never discussed them as this was a work environment. He must have just had a heated discussion with someone and then something I said triggered a rant - "Well, which one of my parent's six kids should have never been born?". Stunned, I made it clear that we were not talking about anything other than customers and work. He apologized and it was dropped. I heard, he later move to a camp of fundamentalists in the Arkansas outback.

I have kids & I would have laughed at then agreed with your comment in regard to my older daughter ay least.

If its her first kid & he's fairly young the thought may never have occurred to her before & as has been said here already the truth hurts ... I don't really think what you said was "over the line", but I wouldn't have said it in quite those words unless I knew the person well.

Maybe she is having problems with him and wonders if you are right. Assuming it went down as I see it happening, I wouldn't think that it would be offensive.

I say things like that all the time. I use an expression and tone to make sure that I am only being a sarcastic SOB. If someone doesn't like what I said, well, boo-hoo.
