Never played the game, just curious...

We had a local kid die recently after being hit in the head with a ball, just below helmet line.

Was wondering why women do not wear helmets? Is it a different type of ball?

All I know is that they have different sticks than men (at least my high school team does), that dont have the little pockets in the back part of the head so they cant really cradle the ball.

I would imagine they have a different ball, but dont exactly know. I will ask my friend today.

I have NEVER seen more than one type of lacrosse ball, and I used to play. Are you talking about the same thing, or field hockey?

I've seen women wear protective googles some times. Men typically toss the ball much faster than women.

If women aren't getting injured, why load oneself down with unnecessary gear.

I believe the game is played differently -- the women's came does not include certain things like hitting, checking etc, reducing the need for a helmet.

No checking allowed in women's Lacrosse. They also have to shoot the ball a certain way and only from certain distances. The odds of getting hurt from being hit with the ball are not high so only the goalie wears one.

Um, so was Lacrosse, champ. It was the first Native American sport.

Sounds almost like a comparison between basketball and netball to me.

It's really more of a game of stamina more than anything else... if you can outrun the other team odds are you will win. Having a few good shooters doesn't hurt either... I remember back in HS when we would be doing all our drills I could swear the girls team would be running upwards of 10 miles a day around the fields.

Women?s LaX is None to Low contact. Men?s is Full. In guys LaX you get beat on, hence the padding, in Women?s they have stick checking (which has very strict rules) where the guys have stick and body checking. So the guys need the helmet due to the nature of the contact sport. The Men?s sticks are also different than the Women?s. Since of the lack of contact in Women?s their sticks have a small "pocket" which is where the ball sits, so it is much easier for the ball to fall out. In mens the pocket is much deeper and holds the ball a lot better, this pocket also allows men to get a lot more power on a shot/pass. Where women due to the design of their sticks cannot. Its similar to throwing a baseball with a Men's stick and shotput with a Women's stick.

Men's and Women's Lacrosse are for all intents and purposes, two different sports.

Men's Lax is full contact, where as women's is technically no contact, but they let things slide.

Men can hit each other with body and stick checks. Women, merely cover each other and block with their sticks. Women are required, in some area's to wear protective Eyewear, however many of them actually loathe this aparatus.

Yeah right.

Those lacrosse women are VICIOUS, they play just as hard, from what I've seen.

Women rarely do, but sometimes thay have some protective googles on, depending on the sport they're playing. Mainly because they rarely don't get involved in rough sports.

Mostly the men wear helmets, expecially in football for safety reasons.
