Above the belt and below the shoulders is ok I think, not too sure though. I assume you are talking about for men right?
 
Yeah, someone was calling my checks illegal in practice. Another question, what is the rule on slap checks. I thought if they started within 18" of the attackman they were kosher.

You must be going for the hands/forearms/stick when either poke checking or slap checking. Refs are a little more lenient with poke checking though.
