Lack of interest

I am not sure if it is because I am getting older, but I seem to be losing any interest in multiplayer gaming. I have a positive K/D spread on most games, but I just don't seem to enjoy them anymore. Anyone else go through this at times?

i've gotten back into fighting games more the past couple years partially for the reason of losing interest in FPS in general.

the thing i really enjoy about fighting games is that at advanced levels, it becomes more of a mind game. something about trying to out-smart someone through mind games is very fun and rewarding. it also is fun when someone outsmarts you with mind games, and you have to figure out a way to then in turn outsmart them.

it is also very different than FPS games because it is solely 100% on you and nothing else. has nothing to do with where you spawn, who is on your team, what weapon you have vs your opponent, level control, etc. you are 100% in control of the outcome, and if you lose, it is flat out because the opponent is better than you.

and i definitely have less time to play games as i've gotten older. i turn 30 this year. i also like how i can get on a fighter, play 5 quick matches, and get off 10 minutes later.

Yeah, I have two kids and am a single dad, so time isn't there for me. I know that I enjoy playing the stories on FPS, I just don't seem to get into the online community for them. I guess it's a good thing that I own both systems, so I can play the exclusives on my PS3, as they seem to have some good stories in them.

im actually the opposite, i typically don't like the single player experiences in FPS games and rather just hop right online when I get them. the single player experiences i enjoy a ton are more of the third person adventure games that are exclusive to ps3 - uncharted, ratchet and clank, gears of war.

Yeah, I am loving Uncharted 2. I really enjoyed God of War 3 (I never played the first 2), and am looking at the Ratchet and Clank games since they are pretty cheap.

The problem is that console shooters don't have dedicated servers, so you're playing with totally anonymous people all the time who don't have to worry about accountability at all because you'll most likely never see them again. I refuse to play console shooters online for this reason, the communities are god awful.

if you read his OP, that actually doesn't sound like the problem at all. i haven't had any issues with console FPS online since back in 2004 when Halo 2 came out. not sure what you mean by "accountability" either. if you dont like playing with someone just avoid the player and move on.

It has nothing to do with the community. When I do play, I play with friends. I just haven't been interested with playing online in general.

I'm with you, up until I was around 35-ish, I would love hoping online for deathmatch, squad based MP, etc., but now I spend about 90% of my time playing single player only, and the other 10% that is multiplayer I spend in coop stuff where I'm not at odds with the people I'm playing with, but playing/fighting for a common goal.

I'm actually really excited about the single player campaign in Mortal Kombat, which I've heard is awesome, way more excited than I am about hopping online and trying to fight against someone and maintain any sort of rank.

On every PC shooter I've played, I've found a home server that I played regularly on, and I got to know the people that did the same. This doesn't happen on consoles, which allows people more opportunities for the Internet Dickwad Theory.

yes, that does happen on consoles and it happens very often. that is the whole purpose of the friend list, to play games with the same group of people. and it isn't just FPS ... it is every genre.

Played a little of the Gears beta last night and actually had a fun time with it last night. I still just don't get as excited as I used too. I don't know if it is because the amount of hours I can play has been cut back, so I feel like I am at a disadvantage against the people that play it all the time.

I agree with you in a way. I usually don't play online unless I have a friend online to play with. Its just not as fun with randoms. That doesn't mean I never play alone, but lately it seems if nobody is on, I'll go do something else.

i def. agree with OP. i occassionaly play games online from time to time. I do prefer to play with people i know.

I think pubs are too full of "pro's or Elites" that no matter good or bad they totally ruin the game for everyone
All the way from CSS to L4D/killing floor.

and steam sales as well lol

Did you play the original Uncharted before playing 2? I've been considering checking these games out but I'm not sure if I should start with the first or jump right into the 2nd.

I played a lot of the original at my ex-wife's families house a while back. But when I got my PS3, I just went and read the wiki page on the Uncharted to get the story from it. I have been trying to get back into Uncharted 2, but figured I should play as much of the Gears beta for now while it's avaliable.
