Labouring At Low Revs

Is this bad for an engine? i have a habit of shifting gears quite early, ~2000RPM, and if its a slight incline, sometimes the engine labours and i get no power and some vibration, i know when you are breaking in a new engine its advised not to, but what about for a worn in engine?

Also what does it do for fuel consumption, the lower the revs the lower the fuel consumption i know, but does this only work to a certain extent where the engine starts to be inefficient?

Vauxhall Corsa SXi 1.2 Litre...

Great little car

1.2L, no wonder.

Move your shift points higher - 3000rpm should be fine.

Haha! Well whilst i'd love do drive something with more power, this is pretty much all i'm going to get for a reasonable insurance rate... i pay £1800 a year for this, whats that about... $3500 dollars? Whilst its not fast its quite nippy around town, it weighs next to nothing! PLUS i get about 40 - 50 MPG!

Yea shifting higher is no problem, just wondering what its like for the engine to do this...

Sorry to threadjack, but is that what you pay for insurance??? $3500 is more than my car payment and insurance combined.

Yep thats what i pay, its really bad... and believe it or not thats considered quite cheap, a friend of mine was paying about $4200 for basically the same car (same engine and size) i spose i am the highest risk group though, an 18 yea old male in his first year of driving... alot of money...

A while back i got given a 16 year old BMW 320i, it was worth about £500, the CHEAPEST quote i could get was £3500, about $6800 a year, for that car, and that was 3rd party only... we really get mugged over here with car insurance...

Why are all your rates so high? How do you all afford to drive? I seriously only pay less than $1500 a year for 4 vehicles, with full coverage on 3, and 2 of them high risk sports vehicles (one sports car, one sportbike). Granted I'm older, married with kids, and have a fairly clean record, but I can't even imagine paying that much for that car. My POS truck only cost $190/yr for liability.

BMW did a study in the past and they proved that shifting at low RPM's and giving maybe 75% or so throttle was the best method. I don't remember much, other than the one time it was mentioned on AT, Zenmervolt mentioned it, might want to look around.

Well, theoretically, internal combustion engines are at their highest efficiency (amount of power produced/amount of fuel consumed) at full throttle, so ideally, you should always drive with your foot on the floor.

At least its a lot more fun that way.

No thats not including fuel... including fuel its probably closer to $5000, i cover about 150 miles a week, that costs me about $40 take a few...

How do i afford to drive... well pretty expensively! lol i really resent the companies for it, taking money from those that can least afford it (students) i can see why they do it but still...
