What is a reasonable labor charge for replacing siding on one wall? Two stories tall, 22' wide, no windows, one gas fireplace (6' x 9') to go around.

I got a quote for $1800 labor and $650 materials and that labor amount seemed high.

Is it worth $200 (labor + materials) to add 1/2" of insulation to just one wall? I'm thinking no, but was curious about what you think. I'll have to do the heat transfer calculations first though.

I think it is this siding to match the rest of the house: http://www.lowes.com/pd_6284-46086-259981_4294934232__?productId=1095011&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1

That's why you always get multiple quotes and check out the companies before contracting with them.

What kind of siding? Never mind I see it says vinyl in the title.

Insulation is a tricky one. Depending on what you have in place already I think the, potential exists for double vapor barriers. I would at least google to see of it would be a true benefit (it might be...).

From what I can tell, I have standard 6" walls with insulation (the house is only 12 years old). The walls are covered by Tyvex, but have no rigid foam.

I only am considering it since that is the biggest wall on the main two rooms of the house, so the heat transfer reduction would be most noticible on that wall. But, then again, one wall without windows is just a small part of the whole heat loss in a house.

My 2012 Craftsman Insurance Repair Database using a south/east zip code gives.
Remove Labor .17 sq. ft.
Replace Labor 1.05 sq. ft.
Material 2.13 sq. ft.
Total 3.35 sq. ft.
This is siding only not inc. corner, trim, and j-rails, soffit, facia.

seems very high on the labor... and material tbh. i used to know a sider, he used to get $25 labor per square he said. a square was one box worth of siding, so whatever that covers you can multiply it out to how many sq ft your one wall is and get an idea.

of course you have to figure cost to remove and dispose of the old siding first, so i guess that could be a $500 job.... so maybe $1800 labor isnt crazy but it still seems like a lot.

Thanks. I have to measure exactly, but it is just about 500 ft^2. So that comes out to $1675. The quote includes new corners, so I'll round up to $2000. Still doesn't come out to the $2450 price.

With this method, assuming ~10% waste, that is $2160. Still under my quote.

Looks like I'll keep waiting for more actual contractor quotes. This first quote is from the company that is rebuilding the house next door (fire damaged both homes, gutted their home and melted my siding) and could just fit in my work between other tasks (and have combined savings like using one roll-off dumpster). I had hoped that would keep prices low. Guess not.

not a bad thought. you might have to force an idea like that into the contractors mind before he gives you the estimate. normally, it wont make much difference though.

most contracts do a decent job on siding, so i wouldnt worry much about who actually does it. where the pros shine is when theyre siding an old house or over an uneven exterior... that can be a real pain.. but if you have flat plywood walls and its a newer house with square walls, its pretty hard to screw up.

Yes, he knew why I asked him for the quote.

I considered doing it myself. It shouldn't be too hard. But then, I have a horrbile fear of heights and just can't work 20 feet off the ground. I agree with you that the quality should be similar with whomever I choose.

just had a guy side a 11' wide dormer, with 2 windows with space in between, complete with new gutter....$400 including tearing old stuff and disposal. I was satisfied and will be calling him to finish the rest. It's an old house so every repair job is a PITA. Plus it's 2-1/2 stories up where the ground slopes, etc.

Did your insurance co. provide you an estimate?
The contractor next door probably does fire & water restoration and they do every trade (drywall, elec. plumbing, framing, roofing) or sub contract these trades. They add 10% overhead and 10% profit to their estimates when multiple trades are involved. This extra 20% is their standard practice and is probably added to the estimate they gave you. You probably want to contact someone that is in the vinyl siding and gutter business.

No, insurance called it an Act of God and wouldn't do a thing for me (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2254075). With a $3000 deductible, insurance isn't going to kick in. They did however, get the contractor next door to start the quote process which is why they came in first with a bid. 20% less would be much more in line with what I'd be comfortable paying.

Technically it sounds like your next door neighbors ins. co. denied your third party liability claim since the loss wasn't due to the neighbors negligence. Your insurance co. won't pay cause the loss is less than the deductible.

Yes. Same company, same agent though. So I had no one fighting for me.

If it makes you feel any better and it won't. It wouldn't have matter if it was different ins. co. or agents. There is no fight there. There is no coverage. It sucks but that's the way it is. I've been an ins. adjuster for 20 plus years and have owned an independent adjusting company for the last 12 years. Your $3000 deductible bit you in the ass. That's a strange # for a deductible. The highest I usually see is a $1000 or 5% of policy limits in hurricane prone areas.

Went with a 2% of the home value deductible. It isn't exactly $3000, but it is close. Saved several hundred dollars a year with that, but now after 7 years it bit me. I made my calcuations by planning for a claim every 10 years, so I lost a bit on that gamble.

yeah i was going to say, with a 3K deductible, that pretty much eliminates all small to medium sized claims.. and if youre paying for insurance but can never use it, why have it
